ALBANY — The Albany Comets fell behind earlier on, but rallied to send their Division 5 regional quarterfinal against Benton to five sets. However, the Zephyrs closed off the match, winning the back-and-forth fifth set. The final score for the eighth-seeded Comets read 17-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23, 16-18.
The Comets were down 5-0 at the beginning of the fifth set. Minutes later, Emma Thompson recorded a kill to get the Comets to within 7-3. A rally ensued, and soon after a return error by Benton put the Comets in front 10-9.
The Zephyrs rallied themselves, and Albany found itself at match point trailing 14-12. Albany freshman Piper Patchen then scored consecutive aces to give her team a 15-14 lead. But, the ninth-seeded Zephyrs took advantage of a return error by Albany to regain momentum. With an ace moments later, Benton won the fifth set 18-16.
Albany closes its season 2-16.
