EAST TROY — The Monroe Cheesemakers are off to a good start of their girls tennis season as they picked up a pair of wins at the East Troy Invitational on Tuesday, Aug. 19.

No. 3 — Allison Wolf and Brooke Bournoville, Union Grove def. Caedyn Blackburn and Elise McKenzie, Monroe, 6-1, 6-2.
“Layla and Rylee played an extremely competitive match at No. 1 doubles which I think will be important for them down the stretch,” said Cheesemakers coach Matt Bordner. “Union Grove had an incredibly strong singles lineup and you could tell it was a team that will be able to compete at a high level in D1 competition.”
Monroe 4, Delavan-Darien 3
The Cheesemakers won a nail-biter in their second round match as they defeated Delavan-Darien, 4-3. Bordner pointed out a razor-thin difference in the singles competition.
“Our second round match was extremely competitive. Addy and Jade both went to super tiebreakers that went opposite directions. Jade had a lead early in hers and couldn’t hold on, while Addy was able to come back from being down early in her tiebreaker to pick up a huge win. Mads also picked up an important win at No. 4 singles and played extremely steady tennis. She had several big hustle points and fought hard to get us the win,” Bordner said.
The Cheesemakers prevailed at doubles, taking two of the three matches.
“Our wins in doubles came from Layla and Rylee who continued to impress. The last match of this round that was playing was at No. 2 doubles, as both teams sat at three wins. Kaya and Alexis came up with many clutch points and stayed loose down the stretch which was important as the match got tighter and tighter,” said Bordner.
Singles:
No. 1 — Adeline Eckerman, Monroe def. Sophia Szczap, Delavan-Darien, 6-3, 1-6, 10-6.

No. 3 — Jayna Kirkpatrick , Delavan-Darien def. Jade Tran, Monroe, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.
No. 4 — Mads Josephs, Monroe def. Kaiya Logterman, Delavan-Darien, 6-1, 7-5.
Doubles:
No. 1 — Layla Pallesen and Rylee Svendsen, Monroe def. Anna Smith and Kaydence Gould, Delavan-Darien, 6-3, 6-2.
No. 2 — Alexis Gertsch and Kaya Holverson, Monroe def. Emily Hamlin and Cadyn Lumkes, Delavan-Darien, 7-5, 6-4.
No. 3 — Tanner Wagner, and Isabella Barber, Delavan-Darien def. Miah Coppes, and Mara Dickson, Monroe, 6-0, 7-6 (7).
Monroe 7, Edgerton 0
The Cheesemakers finished the day with a make-up of their match with Edgerton that was rained out on Monday. Monroe dominated with a 7-0 sweep of the Crimson Tide. ”Edgerton graduated almost their entire lineup, so they had a very inexperienced team and we did a good job of capitalizing on it,” explained Bordner.
Singles:
No. 1 — Adeline Eckerman, Monroe def. Vanessa Hernandez, Edgerton, 6-2, 6-0.
No. 2 — Jade Tran, Monroe def. Taylor Johnson, Edgerton, 6-1, 6-2.
No. 3 — Mads Josephs, Monroe def. Carleigh Reed, Edgerton, 6-0, 6-0.
No. 4 — Miah Coppes, Monroe def. Jorja Brandreth, Edgerton, 6-0, 6-0.
Doubles:
No. 1 — Layla Pallesen and Rylee Svendsen, Monroe def. Hannah Wileman and Hayden Wileman, Edgerton, 6-1, 7-5.
No. 2 — Alexis Gertsch and Kaya Holverson, Monroe def. Genevieve Sparrgrove-Christofferson and Allison Apple, Edgerton, 6-0, 6-1.
No. 3 — Elise McKenzie and Caedyn Blackburn, Monroe def. Angela Cruz and Skarlett Thomas, Edgerton, 6-1, 6-0.
The next time the Cheesemakers take to the court will be Saturday, Aug. 30 at the Stoughton Invitational.
“We move to 4-1 overall and have a nice stretch of practices ahead that will hopefully allow us to work on some of the weaknesses we saw over the past few days,” added Bordner.
