MONROE — The Monroe hockey co-op finished its weekend with a 7-4 win over Whitefish Bay on Saturday, December 3.

The Blue Dukes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from Evan Mortonson and Ian McLaren. In the last nine minutes of the period, though, the Cheesemakers flipped a switch to score four goals.

Ethan Rosenstiel sparked the offense with a goal at the halfway mark. Wyatt Janecke — after assisting in Rosenstiel’s goal — scored two minutes later to tie the game at two. Easton Dreyfus gave Monroe the lead with two goals late in the first period, just over two minutes apart.

The Cheesemakers had a man-advantage in the second, as the Blue Dukes sent a skater to the box for roughing. Whitefish Bay still managed to put one in the back of the net on an unassisted, short-handed goal from Mortonson, his second of the game.

Nathan Ratke returned the favor later in the period with his own short-handed, unassisted goal. Just 18 seconds later, Cole Buholzer put the finishing touches on the second period with a goal, assisted by Janecke and Patrick Alt.

The third period was a wash with one goal from each team. Alt scored early, and Mortonson completed his hat trick with another unassisted goal in the final seconds.

Kyle Theorin played all 51 minutes in goal. He allowed four goals with 22 saves. Janecke finished the game with four points, followed by Buholzer with three. Dreyfus and Alt chipped in two points each.

On Thursday, Dec. 1, Edgewood came to Monroe for a conference game. The Crusaders shut out the Cheesemakers 6-0.

Edgewood scored two goals in the first, three in the second and one in the third. Five different players ended the night with two points: Owen Barnet, Colby Thompson, Dylan Lenz, Cooper Torres and Easton Kinsler.

Xander Obert played all 51 minutes in goal. Although he let up six goals, he saved 48 other shots for a .889 save percentage.
