MONROE — The Cheesemakers let a 3-2 lead slip away in the close minutes of the third period, then lost in overtime to McFarland Jan. 25. The Spartans won 4-3.
McFarland opened the scoring with a lone goal 9:17 into the first period. The Spartans made it 2-0 with a power play goal two minutes into the second. Monroe’s Cole Buholzer lit the lamp with 1:54 left in the second, with Blaze and Wyatt Janecke assisting.
Aiden Grey scored the equalizer with a power play goal 2:18 into the third, and Blaze Janecke scored off a pass from Josh Haight with just under 10 minutes to play to give the Cheesemakers the lead.
McFarland tied it three minutes later, and won after five minutes of action in overtime.
The Cheesemakers were outshot 39-24, but goalie Xander Obert kept Monroe in the game with a series of glass-pounding saves.
Up next for Monroe is a home game Jan. 29 at 3 p.m. against Whitefish Bay in a nonconference game. On Feb. 1, Baraboo-Portage comes to SLICE in Monroe, with Edgewood stopping by two days later.
