MONROE — Monroe fell just short against East Troy on May 19 in a battle to remain undefeated in Rock Valley Conference tennis. The Trojans defeated the 5-2 at Monroe. The Cheesemakers dropped two super tiebreakers at No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles, which ended up making the difference.
Alex Gerrits had three match points in his battle after fighting back from being down 6-9 in his tiebreaker, but he couldn’t quite close the door, falling 3-6, 6-2, 14-12.
The No. 3 doubles team of Graysen Bartholf and Eli Salzwedel dropped a tough loss after a convincing first set as well, 2-6, 6-3, 10-8.
Monroe head coach Matt Bordner said it wasn’t the outcome he was hoping for, but he knows the Cheesemakers can compete with good teams.
“Overall, it was disappointing to lose the most critical match of the season, but it was also validating to know that this team is within our reach. We still have a shot to compete for the conference title if we have a good conference tournament, so we will need to keep working hard,” said Bordner.
On Wednesday, Monroe played Jefferson and won 5-0.
“We weren’t able to get all seven matches completed,” Bordner said.
Monroe will be competing in the Rock Valley Conference meet May 22.
