Cheese On The Short End Of A Pitchers Duel Against Dodgeville
Monroe’s Trent Wyss and Dodgeville’s Caden Schneider hooked up in a pitcher’s duel at Monroe on May 12 and, for only the second time this season, the Cheesemakers lost a one-run game as the Dodgers prevailed 1-0 in nonconference action. The only run of the game came in the third inning when Nathan Johnson of Dodgeville delivered a base hit that scored Ryan Gorgen. It was only the fourth hit of the game for Dodgeville. The Cheesemakers got only one hit — a single by catcher Logan Meier. The only other base runners for the Cheese were right fielder Cole Meighan who got on with a walk, and first baseman Zane Seffrood who was hit by a pitch. The pitching line on Wyss was more than serviceable — one run on four hits, two walks and eight strikeouts. Wyss threw 102 pitches, 59 for strikes.
Cheesemakers Bats Go Silent Again In Loss To Delavan-Darien
One day after being shut out on one hit by Dodgeville, the Monroe Cheesemakers were shut out again, this time on two hits by Delavan-Darien 3-0 in Rock Valley Conference baseball at Delavan on May 13. Monroe (9-7, 2-3 RVC-Valley) had not been shut out in a game this season until this past week. It was a scoreless game until the sixth inning when the Comets scored three runs. Catcher Logan Meier got the only two hits of the game for the Cheesemakers. Left fielder Cam Newcomer was the only other base runner for Monroe as he reached on a walk against Comets pitcher Jacob Huff. Junior Marcus Ott pitched another great game for the Cheesemakers, but took the loss. Ott pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on four hits, three walks and nine strikeouts. The Cheesemakers were to travel to Stoughton on May 17.
RBI Base Hit In the 4th Holds Up In Glarner Knights Win Versus Cambridge
The New Glarus Glarner Knights defeated the Cambridge Blue Jays, 2-1 in Capitol South baseball on May 13. Patrick Alt started the game for the Glarner Knights and got the win. Cambridge opened the scoring in the second inning on a sacrifice fly, scoring one run. Freshman Brock Roth got an RBI ground out, which helped New Glarus tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the third. A single by junior Landon Stelter gave New Glarus (11-5, 5-3 Capitol South) the lead, 2-1, in the top of the fourth, which stood up the rest of the way. Alt gave up four hits and one run over seven innings, striking out one and walking three. Sophomore Matthew Roth, the number eight hitter, led the Knights with two hits in three at bats.
Belleville Loses To Stoughton, Beats Waterloo
The Belleville Wildcats got a loss and a win in high school baseball this past week. On May 12, the Wildcats fell to the Stoughton Vikings 14-3 in five innings in a non-conference game. First baseman James Markhardt of the Wildcats went 1x3 with two RBIs against the Vikings. Second baseman Isaac McKinley went 1x3 and scored a run. Centerfielder Austin McKinley was 1x2 with a double. Cavan Crum and Brennan Keyes pitched for Belleville and each yielded seven runs. Keyes struck out six batters in four innings of work.
The Wildcats (7-12, 5-3 Capitol South) bounced back with a win on May 13 by topping the Waterloo Pirates 4-1 in Capitol South conference baseball. Senior pitcher Niles Monroe got a double among his three hits and scored a run. Monroe scattered seven hits and struck out eight batters to get a complete game win. Centerfielder Logan Derke got a hit and two RBIs to lead the Wildcats. A three-run fourth Inning turned out to be the difference for Belleville. The win puts Belleville in a four-way tie for first place in the Capitol South with New Glarus, Cambridge, and Wisconsin Heights.
Barneveld Tops Pecatonica On 2-Hit Shutout
Barneveld Golden Eagles pitcher Hunter Larson pitched a 2-hit shutout, leading the Barneveld Golden Eagles to a 4-0 win over the Pecatonica Vikings (10-9, 7-7 Six Rivers) in Six Rivers baseball at Barneveld on May 13. The Vikings’ only hits were a leadoff single in the second inning by junior Austin Enloe and a one out single in the fourth inning by senior Drew Hendrickson. The only other base runner for the Vikings was senior Levi Krebs, who reached on a leadoff walk in the fifth. Pecatonica is scheduled to play two nonconference games on May 17 against Beloit Memorial and Iowa-Grant at Blanchardville.
Orioles Get Only One Hit In 16- 0 Loss To Barneveld
Senior Ike Waage got the only hit of the game for the Argyle-Black Hawk Orioles in a 16-0 loss to the Barneveld Golden Eagles in Six Rivers conference baseball on May 12. Barneveld pitchers Ty Thousand and Cooper Shipman walked three and struck out 13 in the game reduced to five innings on the 10-run rule. Barneveld took a 9-0 lead in the first inning before the Orioles had a chance to bat. Weston Ganshert, Mikey Helfvogt, and Braylon Bidlingmair reached base for the Orioles (1-16, 1-14 Six Rivers) with base on balls. It was the sixth straight loss for Argyle-Black Hawk and their fifth straight loss without scoring a run.
Cuba City No-Hits Darlington
Cuba City’s Gavin Vaassen threw a no-hitter against the Darlington Redbirds in the Cubans 5-0 win on May 13 in SWAL conference baseball at Cuba City. Darlington did get six base runners as Peyton Dempsy and Grady O’Brien each got on with a walk. Dante Glendenning and Calum Crist both were hit by a pitch twice in the game. Crist, Glendenning, and Zeke Zuberbuhler all pitched for the Redbirds and allowed five runs on only three hits. Darlington (5-12, 2-8 SWAL) was scheduled to host Iowa-Grant in another SWAL game on May 16.
Clinton Cougars First Inning Enough To Beat Brodhead Cardinals 3-1
A three-run first inning was all the Clinton Cougars needed to stop the Brodhead Cardinals, 3-1 in Rock Valley conference, Rock Division baseball on May 13 at Clinton. The Cougars got their three runs on four hits off Brodhead starting pitcher Sam Searls, who pitched five innings and walked four and struck out 11 batters. The Cardinals were only able to muster three hits against the Cougars. Searls got one of the three hits and scored the Cardinals only run in the sixth inning. First baseman Max Pinnow went 1x3 with an RBI. It was the fourth straight loss for the Cardinals (9-10, 3-3 RVC-Rock).
Monticello-Albany Suffers Two Losses
The Monticello-Albany Space Stallions dropped a Six Rivers game and a non-conference game in high school baseball on May 9 and May 12.
The Space Stallions started out strong in their game on May 9 against Benton-Shullsburg at Monticello. The Space Stallions led 5-1 after three innings, but Benton-Shullsburg scored eight unanswered runs after that to take a 9-5 win over Monticello-Albany. Senior Nate Stokstad went 1x2 with two RBIs and sophomore Hunter Grossen got two hits, including a double in four at-bats with two RBIs to lead the Space Stallions. Sophomore Tyler Constantini went 2x3 and stole three bases on his way to scoring two runs.
On May 12, Monticello-Albany was roughed up by Palmyra-Eagle 11-1 in a non-conference game in five innings at Palmyra-Eagle. Sophomore Ty Durtschi and sophomore Milo Smith got the only hits for the Space Stallions, who got their only run in the fifth inning. The Panthers jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first three innings.
Braves Sweep Doubleheader From Monticello-Albany
The Belmont Braves swept a doubleheader from the Monticello-Albany Stallions in Six Rivers baseball on May 13 in games played at Kendall Murray Field at UW-Platteville.
The first game was the completion of a suspended game won by Belmont, 15-12. The Space Stallions had taken a 3-0 lead after three innings, but the Braves went off for 13 runs in the fourth inning. The Space Stallions tried to come back with four runs in the fourth, two in the sixth, and three in the seventh but it wasn’t enough. Senior Cody Pryce went 3x5 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore Tyler Constantini and senior Kaden Zurfluh also had three RBIs for the Monticello-Albany.
In the second game, the Braves edged the Space Stallions 6-5. Monticello-Albany got off to a 3-0 by the fourth inning, but Belmont got three runs in the fourth, one run in the sixth, and two runs in the bottom of the seventh to overtake the Space Stallions. Senior Nate Stokstad collected two hits and an RBI and Constantini scored a pair of runs for Monticello-Albany (3-17, 2-12 Six Rivers).
