MONROE — The Cheesemakers capped the regular season with a 12-8 dual record on the tennis court thanks to winning two of three duals to close off the season May 16-17.
“It was the best season we’ve had since I took over the program,” said Matt Bordner, now in his fifth year as Monroe’s coach.
The Cheesemakers lost to fifth-ranked East Troy 5-2, but scored a 5-2 victory over Edgerton in the season finale and also swept Burlington 7-0 on May 16.
“I’m really proud of the growth from last season to this season. All of the guys have improved so much, and there’s just not enough I can say about how much fun we had as a group. Our JV has improved a lot as well and it was a fun night for them to finish on too,” Bordner said.
Next up for Monroe is the conference tournament in Baraboo May 21, then subsectionals in Portage May 23.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing how our guys do and looking forward to some productive practices to finish out this week and lead into a strong finish to our season,” Bordner said.
Max Petitjean went 3-0 in the final week at No. 4 singles, edging out Edgerton’s Adam Nelson 7-5, 6-4, but collecting smoother victories over East Troy’s Noah Edwards (6-4, 6-3) and Burlington’s Connor Vandehei (6-1). Edwards entered the match with a 16-1 record on the season.
In doubles actions, Monroe’s top tandem of Chris Giasson and Aaron Roidt went 3-0, giving up just 11 games and zero sets in the stretch. Monroe’s No. 2 team of Wes Saunders and Ethan Towne, as well as No. 3 doubles pairing of Dante Giordano and Mitch Ferguson each went 2-1.
Ryan Mathiason was 2-1 at No. 2 doubles, while Matthew Setterstrom (No. 1 singles) and Gavin Eckerman (No. 3 singles) both went 1-2.
