REEDSBURG — The Cheesemakers lost to Reedsburg 5-2 in a dual, but three matches went to three sets.
“We dropped an extremely close match versus Reedsburg tonight,” Monroe coach Matt Bordner said. “Lindsay (Leuzinger), Taylor (Jacobson), and Sydnee (Conway)/Allison (Wunschel) all played in 3-set matches that lasted 3-plus hours. It’s such a long bus ride to Reedsburg, and we talked a lot about how important it was to get the most out of our court time and, overall, I was really pleased with how we responded.”
Leuzinger lost to Madelyn Casey 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3 in the No. 2 singles match.
“Lindsay played a marathon match. She dropped a close first set and then found herself down 0-5 in the second set,” Bordner said. “She clawed her way back in the second set and grabbed a tiebreak win. She was well into her third hour of tennis and just couldn’t quite close out her match in the third.”
Jacobson, playing at No. 4 singles, lost to Kelsey Kurtenbach 6-7 (6), 6-4, 7-6 (5).
“Taylor played a 3 1/2-hour match and really played her best match of the season thus far. She had some match points out there but couldn’t quite close them out. Her and her opponent were about as even as you can get,” Bordner said. “It was the longest match I’ve seen in quite some time, and we actually were playing after sunset and it was getting quite hard to see the ball too with no lights on the court. I give both players in that match a ton of credit for a gutsy battle.”
Elsewhere in singles play, Monroe’s Krissi Haumer fell 6-4, 6-4 in the top flight, and Kate Kundert was defeated 6-2, 6-0 at 3-singles.
“I know (Haumer) wasn’t happy with how she played but it was good to see her moving a bit better with her ankle injury,” Bordner said.
In doubles action, Conway and Wunschel won their top flight match 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 (5).
“Syd and Allison worked great together and really loosened up in the second and third set and went back to playing fast and aggressive which is my favorite style of tennis for them,” Bordner said.
Grace Versnik and Morgan Johnson lost at No. 2 doubles 6-1, 6-4, but Brooke Hanson and Elly Beckman were victorious for the Cheesemakers at No. 3 doubles, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
“Elly and Brooke put together their most complete match of the season so far and brought great energy and intensity. I’ve been pretty hard on them the past few weeks so it was pretty refreshing to see them respond and really play up to their potential tonight,” Bordner said.
