MAZOMANIE — The Monroe girls basketball team hadn’t won a game since their season-opener on Nov. 17, but their 50-41 victory over Wisconsin Heights on Tuesday, Jan. 30 snapped that 17-game losing streak. The Cheesemakers (2-17, 0-9 RVC) had previously fallen to the Vanguards (4-11, 1-4 Capitol South) 54-29 on Nov. 28.
“I’m just so happy for them to not only enjoy this victory, but to see what they are capable of overcoming,” Monroe head coach Patrick Kenny said.
Monroe trailed Wisconsin Heights 23-4 before Lindsay Leuzinger drained a 3-pointer, which sparked a 10-2 run that closed out the first half. The Cheesemakers then went on to outscore the Vanguards 36-16 in the second half.
Brinley Roidt recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Sophie Golembiewski led the offense with 12 points, going 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Abbey Matley tallied 10 points with a 3-pointer, too. As a team, the Cheesemakers made seven 3s. The Vanguards made just four, accounting for the nine-point difference.
EVANSVILLE 55, MONROE 47
MONROE — The Cheesemakers were knocking on the door of their second victory the night before, as they fell to the Devils (5-14, 5-5 RVC) by eight. At one point in the first half, Monroe led 14-11.
Golembiewski had a career-high 21 points, including a pair of threes. She also tallied six rebounds. Matley led on the glass with 11 boards. As a team, Monroe outrebounded Evansville 45-34.
BLACK HAWK 54, ALCS 37
MADISON — A strong inside presence aided the Warriors (8-10, 2-4 Six Rivers East) in a nonconference victory over the Challengers (13-5, 7-2 Trailways South) on Monday, Jan. 29. Black Hawk scored 42 points in the paint, supplemented by 24 offensive rebounds.
“They played a 1-3-1 zone for most of the game and switched to 2-3 late, but our zone offense was ready for it,” Black Hawk head coach Steve Herbst said. “We got the ball inside a lot since our outside shots weren’t falling in first half.”
Maddy Lange led the Warriors with 20 points and eight rebounds. Hailey Wellnitz crashed the glass for nine rebounds, while Kendra Haldiman was a defensive threat with seven steals and five deflections.
SOUTH BELOIT 39, JUDA 30
SOUTH BELOIT, Ill. — Even scoring throughout four periods didn’t lead to success for the Panthers (1-17, 0-6 Six Rivers East), as they dropped a nonconference game to the Sobos on Monday, Jan. 29. Phoenix Homan led the squad with 11 points, while Katie Brooks and Rianna Sullivan tallied eight each.
