Brodhead wins own invite; Pec tips BH

BRODHEAD — The host Cardinals walked away from its annual invitational as champions. Brodhead defeated Mineral Point 25-14, 26-24 in the championship match.

The Cardinals finished 4-0 in pool play, defeating Evansville, Argyle, Albany and New Glarus. In the Gold Bracket semifinals, Brodhead rolled Beloit Turner 25-10, 25-19, while Mineral Point clipped New Glarus 25-7, 25-18. New Glarus was 3-1 in Pool A, with Evansville finishing 2-2, Argyle 1-3 and Albany 0-4. 

In Pool B, Mineral Point went 4-0, with Turner finishing 3-1, Juda 2-2, Monroe 1-3 and the Brodhead varsity reserve 0-4.

New Glarus topped Turner for third place, while Argyle beat Evansville in three sets in the fifth-place match, and Juda defeated Monroe in three sets for seventh place.

In the Silver Bracket, Argyle defeated Juda 25-18, 25-20, then avenged a pool-play loss to Evansville, winning in three sets. Grace Ganshert had 33 kills, eight assists and 68 digs for the Orioles. Maggie Godfrey had 35 kills and six aces. Breann Flannery and Tori Lantz each had seven aces, with Flannery adding 73 digs. Megan Johnson dished out 92 assists.

Monroe lost to Baraboo two days prior to the invitational, 25-11, 25-15, 25-16.


Brodhead 3, Edgerton 1

BRODHEAD — The Cardinals entered the weekend coming off a major Rock Valley win over Edgerton, one of the top teams in the conference. Brodhead scored the win, 25-20, 21-25, 25-12, 25-20 on Sept. 9.

Abbie Dix slammed 23 kills, four blocks, three aces and 11 digs for points for Brodhead, while Kirsten Fish and McKenna Young each added seven kills. Alexis Kammerer dished out 42 assists in the offensive attack while digging out 11 balls. Daisy Nelson led Brodhead with 16 kills and added three aces at the service line. Madisyn Kail also had three aces, while Young had two aces.


New Glarus 3, Belleville 1

BELLEVILLE — The Knights lost the first set 18-25 against rival Belleville, then rallied over the next three frame to score the victory, 26-24, 25-17, 25-16.

Grace Nommensen led New Glarus with 10 kills and 16 assists. Lindsey Schadewalt had eight kills, four aces and 11 assists. Amber Horn had three aces and five digs. 

For Belleville, Ava Foley finished the night with 12 kills, three aces and four digs. Callie Smith had eight blocks and six kills. Kenna Edge had 12 assists, with Addison Edge adding 10 more. Mel Humke finished her night with seven digs, and Morgan Messner tallied a pair of aces.


Monticello 3, Barneveld 0

BARNEVELD — The Ponies swept the Eagles to take full control of the league table on Sept. 9, winning 25-14, 25-20, 25-14.

The first-place Six Rivers East Ponies, also ranked No. 6 in the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association’s Division 4 poll, received 15 kills and four aces from Ellie Gustafson, and eight kills and six blocks from Hannah Clark. Setter Kelsy Grant tallied 20 assists.


Darlington 3, Boscobel 0

DARLINGTON — The Redbirds picked up a sweep of SWAL foe Boscobel Sept. 9, 25-18, 25-12, 25-16.

Taylor Wedig had eight kills and four blocks, while Jaylynn Schwartz added seven kills. Aubrey McCarthy tallied 22 assists and three aces, and Kaylee Schwartz added a team-high seven digs.


Albany 3, Juda 2

JUDA — The Comets pulled out a nail-biter against the Panthers Sept. 9, winning in a tiebreaker 16-25, 27-25, 25-18, 24-26, 15-10.

Brianna Dahl had 32 kills, 26 digs and seven blocks for Albany. Myah Johnson scored seven aces and Payton Firth finished with 28 assists to lead the Comets.

Morgan Schneeberger led Juda with eight kills and 31 digs. Jackie Nusbaum dished out 20 assists, Kiahna Schmid had two aces and Jerzie Lerch added four blocks for the Panthers.


Pecatonica 3, Black Hawk 2

BLANCHARDVILLE — The Vikings picked up a rare win over Black Hawk Sept. 9, winning 23-25, 25-15, 25-14, 17-25, 15-8.

Lexi Peterson had 13 kills, and 10 blocks. Tessa Green had nine kills 17 assists and two aces. Chloe Schraepfer finished with 10 assists, two aces, four kills and five digs. Gracie Gordon tallied five aces and five digs. Siri Thronson added seven blocks, while Sienna Runden chipped in three more.

“It was a great team win,” said Pecatonica co-coach Liz McGowan. “Everyone played their role and played with a lot of passion. They went after everything.”
