Edgewood 43, NG-Monticello 19

NEW GLARUS — For three quarters, the winless Glarner Knights stayed within a single score of the fourth-ranked Edgewood Crusaders. However, two fourth quarter touchdowns with 2-point conversions turned a near upset into a runaway contest.

New Glarus-Monticello struck first, as Max Marty connected with AC Strok for a 50-yard touchdown pass less than three minutes into the game to put the Knights up 7-0. Edgewood tied it less than a minute into the second quarter on a touchdown run, but NGM took the lead with 4:28 to go to halftime when Marty muscled his way in from a yard out.

However, the ensuing kickoff went for a 99-yard touchdown, and the extra point gave Edgewood a 14-13 advantage. The wild second quarter wasn’t over, however, and Marty and Strok connected for a second score, this time from 61-yards out with 3:41 to go in the stanza, giving NGM a 19-14 lead. The Crusaders scored one final time before half on a 26-yard run with 1:56 left on the clock.

Just 60 seconds into the third quarter, Edgewood’s Mason Folkers scored on a 35-yard run to make it 27-19. The Knights didn’t score the rest of the way, and Folkers added a 2-yard TD run and a 6-yard TD pass in the fourth to put the game away.

Marty finished the night 13 of 21 passing for 209 yards. Ethan Friedrich had 53 yards rushing and 93 yards receiving on five catches. Edgewood out-gained NGM on offense 419-291.

The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Knights (0-4), who host Lakeside Lutheran (3-1) in Week 5. The Capitol currently has four teams ranked in the Top 10 in Division 4 (Columbus 2, Edgewood 4, Lake Mills 8, Lodi 9). Lakeside Lutheran was ranked a week ago prior to a Week 3 defeat against Lodi.
