MONROE — A strong showing at a Wisconsin Badgers camp, coupled with a breakout sophomore season on the court and a state high jump title has vaulted Monroe junior Cade Meyer into the forefront of college recruiting. On June 17, Meyer took a visit to UW-Milwaukee and was offered a scholarship on the spot by coach Pat Baldwin.
“Right after the Wisconsin camp, I had a game in Sun Prairie against his son and he shook my hand,” Meyer said. “I rolled my ankle in the game, so I was out for the second half, but he was impressed and called about a campus visit.”
Meyer went on the visit, toured the campus and watched a film session with the team. It’s his first scholarship offer, though his name exploded after the camp. Meyer said teams like Wisconsin, Northern Illinois, Appalachian State and Miami of Ohio have all been in contact.
“I’ve definitely got a lot of interest,” Meyer said.
Meyer averaged 11.2 points per game for the Cheesemakers this past season as a sophomore. Standing at 6-8, he’s able to finish at the rim, hit shots from mid-range and the outside, and he can beat a defender off the dribble.
“He’s working harder now than before,” Monroe coach Brian Bassett said. “Not only the track thing, but his confidence right now is in a completely different place. He’s very assertive on the court now — his 3, post up, pulling up — he wants to be the guy.”
At the Wisconsin camp he showed off all those skills — but against many of the best players throughout the state and Midwest.
“I talked to my dad about it, I just always seem to play better against better competition,” Meyer said. “I just play within myself.
Meyer said he’s going to wait out his recruitment to see if there are other schools that enter the fold. He doesn’t want to make a pick right away if a larger D1 school with more prominence comes into play. Plus, there’s a family connection he’s interested in.
“Bailey Butler is my cousin, and my brother (Conner) is going to Green Bay this fall. It would be cool if I could join them,” Meyer said.
