Butler leads top-ranked Warriors past No. 4 Comets

ALBANY — A battle of top-5 teams in Division 5 went to the top-ranked Black Hawk Warriors, which beat No. 4 Albany 68-51 Jan. 15.

Bailey Butler scored 25 of her career-high 36 points in first half, helping the Warriors take a 37-27 lead into the break. Butler leads the state of Wisconsin in scoring at more than 30 points per game this season. She hit six 3-pointers in the contest and added 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. 

Makayla Mau had 14 points and 7 boards for Black Hawk (10-0, 6-0 Six Rivers East), which has now won 64 games in a row.

Brianna Dahl and Avery Briggs each had 10 points to lead Albany (11-2, 6-2). 


Monroe 65, Milton 47

MILTON — The Cheesemakers scored a big win over the Red Hawks Jan. 16.

Forward Brianna Giasson led Monroe with 21 points, while Megan Benzschawel had 18 and Sloane Ambrose 12. Lily Bobak added 9 points for the Cheesemakers.

Saige Radke led Milton with 12 points. Monroe led 31-19 at halftime.


Edgerton 51, Brodhead 30

BRODHEAD — The Crimson Tide went up 29-13 at halftime and never looked back in their game Jan. 15.

Madisyn Kail led Brodhead with 11 points, while Abbie Dix had 9 points and 15 rebounds for Brodhead. Kate Fox Gunderson (14), Shannon Rusch (12) and Sylvia Fox (11) all finished in double figures in points for Edgerton.

The Cardinals committed 19 turnovers and finished just 1-for-15 from beyond the arc and 6-for-15 from the free throw line.


Marshall 68, New Glarus 54

NEW GLARUS — The Cardinals got a boost from their two NCAA DI prospects en route to a win over the Glarner Knights Jan. 15.

Laura Nickel, a Northern Illinois commit, finished with a game-high 28 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists for Marshall, the top-ranked team in Division 3. Anna Lutz, a UW-Milwaukee commit, scored 22 points.

“The first meeting we took a 28-point loss, and this time around we were on a 7-game winning streak and playing with a lot of confidence,” said New Glarus coach Kevin Parman, who noted the teams swapped leads multiple times in the first half. Marshall led 35-28 at halftime. “I’m very proud of the way we played. We played with a lot of heart.”

Jaylynn Benson and Lindsey Schadewalt each had 13 to lead New Glarus, with Grace Nommensen adding 10 points. 


Pecatonica 70, Johnson Creek 52

BLANCHARDVILLE — The Vikings exploded in the second half to score a nonconference win Jan. 15.

Trailing 27-22 at the intermission, Pecatonica outscored Johnson Creek 48-25 in the second half to pick up its second win of the season.

Sophomore Chloe Schraepfer had a career-high 31 points to lead the Vikings, while junior Tessa Green added 23. Lexi Peterson chipped in with 8 points in the paint.

Johnson Creek (1-13) relied heavily on its two top scorers: Lexi Swanson and Brittany Rue. Both players finished with double-doubles, scoring 23 and 26 points, and grabbing 13 and 11 rebounds. Only one other Blue Jay scored in the game, however, as Josey Whitehouse finished with a single 3-pointer.

In other area games Jan. 15, Mineral Point defeated Darlington 64-47 in a SWAL matchup and Argyle beat Barneveld in a Six Rivers East Conference contest.
