JUDA — Williams Bay got the best of Juda in a varsity doubleheader on Saturday, Dec. 17, as the girls won 56-23 and the boys 59-18.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-0 lead, starting with a 3-pointer from AnnMarie Cates. Juda didn’t score its first points of the game until five minutes in, as Jackie Nusbaum grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back in for two points. She scored again with an assist from Marta Escalero.

The Panthers got within one with a free throw from Ciarrah Davis, and, later in the half, Davis tied the game at nine with a basket. Williams Bay regained its lead with a pair of free throws from Margaret Higgins.

The lead didn’t last long, as Alexxis Metz drained a 3-pointer in her first touch off the bench. It was the only lead the Panthers held all game. The Bulldogs responded with a 19-0 run, during which Nusbaum picked up her third foul of the first half.

Juda scored the last points of the half, as Briliey Swedlund made a pair of free-throws. A jump ball gave the Panthers the last possession on an inbounds play, but with 0.2 seconds Juda was unable to score. Williams Bay had a 30-14 lead at halftime.

Although it took Juda five minutes to score in the first half, it took just 38 seconds in the second half. Nusbaum opened the half with a bucket and, 30 seconds later, added another to two points to her total.

Two minutes later, though, Nusbaum picked up her fourth foul. Assistant coach Justy Roth, coaching in the absence of Austin Pax, was forced to keep Nusbaum in, as she led the offense with 10 points.

“It was extremely tough having Jackie in foul trouble,” Roth said. “She was on fire and was itching to get back in. I told her after her fourth foul that I need her to keep playing and she did that. She fought hard to her final foul, and I give her a lot of credit for that.”

Nusbaum scored her eleventh point at the charity stripe before fouling out with just over seven minutes left in the game.

Swedlund’s bucket, which made it 45-23, was Juda’s final points of the game. The Bulldogs scored 11 unanswered points to close out the game. With just under four minutes left, Williams Bay put in all subs, as did Roth with just under three minutes.

Nusbaum led the offense with 11 points, while Lavinia Rufer grabbed a team-leading 12 rebounds. The duo of Cates and Higgins propelled Williams Bay, scoring 17 and 16 points, respectively.
