BSMS dominates Six Rivers; Brodhead-Juda girls RVC champs

PATCH GROVE — Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg (BSMS) dominated the Six Rivers Conference meet held June 7 at River Ridge. BSMS scored 212 points in the boys rankings, and 205 in the girls rankings. River Ridge (175 boys, 148 girls) was second, with Albany girls (73) and Black Hawk boys (62) third.

BSMS won 13 of the 18 boys events. Pecatonica-Argyle’s 3,200-meter relay quartet of David Tisch, Ridge Toay, Nathan Nickels and Kaden Hartwig finished first (9:32.64). The group finished second (3:53.56) in the 1,600-relay. Jace Starr was second in the 110-hurdles (21.04).

Albany’s Jesse Schwartz, Brian Cid, Ethan Koss and Gage Roth were second in the 3,200 (9:34.64). Ethan Koss was third in the 110-hurdles (22.45) and the 300-hurdles (50.05). 

Monticello’s Wade Noriega was third in the discus (106-06). Evan Guenther was second in the 1,600 (4:54.82) and the 800 (2:04.62). BSMS senior Niko Karavergos broke the five-year-old record in the 800 (2:02.78) by 18/100ths of a second.

Black Hawk’s Elijah Shelton finished second in the 100 (12.25). Teammate Thatcher Schliem was third in the shot put (36-08-5). 

On the girls side, Monticello’s Hannah Clark was the champion in the 200 (28.02) and 400 (1:02.96). 

Albany’s Ava Ahnen was second in the 800 (2:44.27) and 1,600 (5:53.37). Teammate Mckenna Broughton was third in the 3,200 (13:51.33) behind the BSMS sisters Kayci and Hanna Martensen — each of which broke the conference record set by Pec-Argyle’s Elise Sigg in 2009. Kayci Martensen’s new record stands at 11:26.51, more than 40 seconds lower than Sigg’s previous mark. Albany’s Jada Flannery was second in the shot put (30-10.5) and the discus (94-04).

Albany’s quartet of Broughton, Linsey Mueller, Kaiya Zurfluh, and Payton Wachholz finished champions in the 3,200-relay (11:42.86). Pec-Argyle team of Allie Godfrey, Lexi Peterson, Anna Tisch and Sydney Webster were second (12:12.09). The same Pec-Argyle squad was third in the 1,600 (4:45.67), just behind Black Hawk’s Emily Triem, Jenna Meier, Kaylee Brooker and Makayla Mau (4:45.38).

In the 300-meter hurdles, Tisch was second (52.05) behind Hanna Martensen (50.35), with Triem third (52.05).

Black Hawk’s squad of Meier, Bailey Butler, Savannah Freitag, and Kaylee Marty took second in the 800-relay (2:00.48) and third in the 400-relay (57.19). Marty was third in the triple jump (30-11), while Mau was third in the shot put (30-05.00).


Brodhead-Juda girls win Rock Valley, boys fifth

WALWORTH — Six individual champions and a strong lineup throughout the Rock Valley Conference championship meet led to Brodhead-Juda’s girls team capturing the league title with 143 team points. Jefferson (114.5) was second, with Whitewater (96) narrowly edging out Big Foot (94) for third place in the 10-school meet.

On the boys side, Jefferson (164) won the team title, followed by Evansville (93), McFarland (75.5), Big Foot (73.5) and Brodhead-Juda (60), which was a single point ahead of Clinton (59) and two ahead of Whitewater (58).

Maddy McIntyre took first place in the 800 (2:27.62), setting a personal record. Teammate Kalena Riemer (2:35.54) was second. McIntyre also won the 1,600 (5:25.55) and the 3,200 (11:53.39).

Addie Yates set four PRs on the day, capturing three titles in the process. The freshman won the 100-hurdles (16.74), the 300-hurdles (48.66), and the long jump (17-01). In the high jump, Yates finished second (5-04). 

Ellie Yates was third in the long jump (15-06) and third in the 400 (1:04.84), setting a PR.

Jada Burkhalter was second in the 100 (13.04) by 1/100th of a second ahead of Big Foot’s Annie Murphy, setting a PR. The two tied in the preliminary heat at 13.16 seconds.

The boys team had a conference champion in the 400-relays, with Gage Boegli, Gunner Boegli, Sy Weeden and Issac Saunders taking first with a time of 45.88 seconds. 

Josiah Engen won the high jump (6-02)

Gage Boegli set a PR in the shot put (41-05), missing out on second place by five inches.

Kaden Harper was second in the discus (124-03), one inch ahead of third-place Noah Schultz of Jefferson.


Darlington boys second in SWAL

BOSCOBEL — The Redbirds finished second at the SWAL meet June 7, with the girls squad taking fourth.

Cuba City won both team titles. The Cubans scored 121 points on the girls side, narrowly edging Fennimore (120). Boscobel (91.5) was third, followed by Darlington (87.5), Riverdale (86), Iowa Grant (37) and Southwestern (6).

On the boys side, Cuba City (149) finished just ahead of Darlington (144). Boscobel (100) was third, then Fennimore (57), Riverdale (52), Iowa Grant (33) and Southwestern (13).

Darlington’s Rhett Reuter won the 1,600 (4:47.52) and was second in the 800 (2:08.17) and 3,200 (10:55.80).

Easton Evenstad won the 110-hurdles (16.69), the 300-hurdles (44.64) and the long jump (20-03.5). He was third in the 200 (23.81).

Caleb Weaver finished second in the 400 (54.79) for Darlington. Mason Davis was third in the discus (106-10). 

Darlington’s 400-relay team of Carver Fitzsimons, Carter Murray, Cooper Crist and Brandon Hardt were second (47.97). The four-some was third in the 800-relay (1:41.59). Murray, George West, Ethan Thompson and Roger Volkening were second in the 1,600-relay (3:50.29). Weaver, West, Thompson and Connor Larson took third in the 3,200-relay (9:00.02). 

On the girls side, Judith Meister was second in the 3,200 (13:10.83) and Alyza Johnson took second in the pole vault (8-00). 

Raquel Reuter was third in the 1,600 (5:47.14). Jaidyn Evenstad took third in the 100-hurdles (19.48). Abby Solverson finished third in the long jump (14-03.5), and Laura Weaver was third in the discus (88-05).

The Redbirds’ 400-relay team (53.03) of Zoie Zuberbuhler, Abby Solverson, Gabby Leuchtenmacher and Johnson took were conference champions. The same group won the 800-relay (1:51.08). Addison DePauw, Alexis Murray, Raquel Reuter and Meister won the 3,200-relay (10:13.91). 

Monticello, Albany, Pecatonica-Argyle and Black Hawk will compete at the WIAA Division 3 Darlington regional June 14. Those that advance will compete at the Princeton sectional.


Raiders get two conference champions

LAKE MILLS — Sugar River had two winners at the Capitol Conference Championships June 7.

Ava Foley won the triple jump (35-02.75) on the girls side, and Carter Scholey was first in the 3,200 (10:08.05). Foley was also second in the long jump (16-06.5). 

As a team, the Raiders finished fifth in the girls meet, and tied Poynette for eighth on the boys side. Lodi won the girls meet, with Lakeside Lutheran winning the boys title.

Dayna Karls took second in the girls’ 400-meter dash (1:02.68). Tayler Yapp was third in the 3,200 (13:19.84). 

The Raiders’ 400-relay squad of Foley, Kyla Jerome, Katie Bowers and Fraire Herioli were third (55.33).

Sugar River will compete at the WIAA Prairie du Chien Regional June 14, and then the Whitewater sectional three days later.
