MAZOMANIE — Brodhead won the Wisconsin Heights Invitational Sept. 28, while Monroe finished sixth.

Monroe coach Heidi Witt said her team battled despite being shorthanded — the squad had a short bench with players out due to illness and family obligations, and senior setter Lily Frehner played while under the weather.

“She was a trooper and worked her tail off,” Witt said of Frehner. “But the biggest thing for her was to let her teammates help her out on the court when it was needed.”

Monroe brought sophomore Elly Wild and freshman Taylor Jacobson up to varsity to fill some of the holes in the depth chart.

In pool play, Monroe was swept by Kenosha Bradford 16-25, 20-25 before waking up and handling Cambridge 25-11, 25-15.

“We played really flat that first match — we were playing volleyball, but with no energy,” Witt said.

Monroe then lost to Dodgeville 14-25, 17-25.

In the Silver Bracket, the Cheesemakers faced off against Lancaster and won 23-25, 25-16, 15-9 in the semifinals. In the Silver Championship, Monroe lost to Potosi 19-25, 18-25.

“We played Elly Wild and Taylor Jacobson throughout the day; however, they both had strong performances in this match. Wild, as a middle hitter, had a kill and two solo blocks, and Jacobson, as an outside hitter, put down four kills,” Witt said. “On the day Wild had four kills and three blocks and Jacobson had five kills, two aces and five digs. Maddie Leck also did a great job picking up some short tips as we struggled with that most of the day.”

Cassie Gersbach led the Cheesemakers with 37 kills and 20 digs on the day. Lydia Butler had 13 kills, Katie Hayes and Chloe Bunker each finished with 10 kills, Frehner dished out 90 assists and added another 19 digs. Makayla Harrow led Monroe in aces with five, while Butler, Hayes and Jacobson each had two. Alyse Maurer added 20 digs.

Meanwhile, Brodhead went unbeaten on the day, winning all 10 sets faced. Brodhead defeated Potosi 25-15, 25-21, and knocked off Lancaster 25-15, 25-13 and Wisconsin Heights 25-23, 25-13. Kenosha Bradford fell victim to the Cardinals, 25-11, 25-15, as did Dodgeville 25-15, 25-11.

Abbie Dix had 35 kills and 11 blocks to lead the Cardinals, with Sabrina Siegel adding 26 kills and Katie Goecks 15. Siegel led the Cards with nine aces, where as Goecks had six and Dix seven. As a team, Brodhead served 91.8% from the line.
