Brodhead, NG net wins; Monroe falls in home opener

BRODHEAD — Brodhead thumped Evansville 60-35 on Nov. 23. The Cardinals jumped out to a 31-17 lead at halftime, and kept up their lockdown defense and methodical offense, outscoring the Blue Devils 29-18 in the second half.

Kiarra Moe led all scorers with 18 points for Brodhead, 10 in the first half and eight in the second, all on 2-point baskets. Abbie Dix had 16 points, Addie Yates nine and Madisyn Kail seven. Kail and Yates each hit a pair of 3-pointers.

Evansville hit six 3s as a team, but just four 2-point baskets. Maria Messling led the Devils with 11 points. 

Brodhead is now 3-0 on the season, and 2-0 in the Rock Valley Conference. The Cardinals host Albany Nov. 27 in a nonconference game, then Milton Nov. 30.


New Glarus 64, Poynette 46

NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights were 19 of 24 from the free throw line, including 13 of 16 in the first half to knock off the Pumas Nov. 23. New Glarus led 30-23 at halftime, and forced the Pumas into 20 turnovers in the game.

Sophomore sharpshooter Lindsey Schadewalt had 31 points to lead New Glarus, including a perfect 13-for-13 mark from the charity stripe. She also added four of the Knights’ seven 3-pointers. Schadewalt is averaging 26.5 points per game this season after averaging 14.7 a year ago as a freshman.

Alex Atwell finished with nine points for New Glarus, while Elle Lancaster added six. Nine Knights scored in the contest, and all 11 available players saw time on the court.


Belmont 54, Monticello 31

MONTICELLO — The Ponies struggled early on against the full-court press and went into halftime trailing 28-13 in their nonconference road game Nov. 22.

“They are a solid team with good inside and outside play,” said Monticello coach Lori Brokopp. 

Belmont hit seven 3-pointers in the game. Chloe Crapp had 21 points to lead all scorers, with 15 points coming on five 3s. 

Monticello was led by freshman Dalana Trumpy with 13. Ellie Gustafson finished with nine points, nine rebounds and two steals, while freshman Karlie Wilkins added seven points and five boards. 


Potosi-Cassville 44, Pecatonica 43

BLANCHARDVILLE — The Vikings trailed by seven at halftime of their Nov. 22 nonconference tilt, but rallied in the second half to bring it to the wire. In the end, Pecatonica lost by a single point.

Chloe Schraepfer led Pecatonica with 13 points, while Lexi Peterson had 11. Tessa Green and Maddie Hirsch each had six points for the Vikings. Mykalia Butler led Potosi-Cassville with 13 points and five steals, while Emily Bierman added 11 points. 

Potosi-Cassville finished with 25 steals as a team, while the Vikings forced the Chieftains into 35 turnovers. Potosi-Cassville also shot just 16 of 55 (22.5%) from the field, but hit seven 3-pointers.


Highland 68, Argyle 51

ARGYLE — The Orioles dropped a conference crossover game to the Cardinals Nov. 22.

Grace Ganshert and Maggie Godfrey had double-doubles for Argyle. Ganshert had team-high 18 points and 12 rebounds. Godfrey had 13 points and 12 boards. Both tallied three steals.

Alyssa Stadola added 10 points and six rebounds for the Orioles, while teammate Chesney Leigh added five points and four steals. 

Argyle was 5-for-20 from deep and committed 25 turnovers. 


Platteville 54, Darlington 40

DARLINGTON — The Redbirds lost their Nov. 23 nonconference game to the Hillmen, falling behind 27-14 at the end of the first half.

Cayla Golackson led Darlington with 10 points, while Greta Volkening added nine and Aubrey McCarthy 6.

Platteville had three players in double figures: Ellie Temperly (18), Hailey Wiegel (13) and Emily Philipps (12).

In other girls basketball action on Nov. 23, Monroe lost to Stoughton 66-48 in the home opener, while shorthanded Albany fell 67-62 to Belmont on the road.
