Sept. 13 results

Stoughton 3, Monroe 0

MONROE — The Cheesemakers lost to the Vikings 25-19, 29-27, 25-18.

“This was a heartbreaker. Exciting, but a heartbreaker,” Monroe coach Heidi Witt said. “This was a match we should have won. We had some really great moments where we were playing together, passing well, digging the ball up, putting the ball down.

“And then we had some moments where we were simply playing not to lose and not doing the little things right.”

Perhaps the biggest killer was the second set that went into extra points.

“That second set is going to sting for a bit. Stoughton had already taken their second time out when they were down 7-12,” Witt said. “We didn’t finish. That set was ours and we let it slip away.”

Lexi Davis led Monroe with seven kills while teammate Zoee Pond had five kills and five digs. Cassi Gersbach finished with two blocks, Lily Frehner dished out 16 assists, Ellie Mueller had three aces and Alyse Maurer recorded seven digs for the Cheesemakers.

“We have to work hard every single day, when we step on the court at practice time, when we step on the court on game day, every single point we must work hard,” Witt said about getting better. “Nothing is going to come easy, but we have to believe in ourselves and our teammates that we can do it and push through all the way to the final point.”
