SOUTH WAYNE — Black Hawk closed out the first half of the conference slate unbeaten, just as the program has done in the each of the five previous seasons. On Jan. 14, the Warriors used a 29-19 run in the second half to knock off Pecatonica 51-40.
Tara Wellnitz led Black Hawk (9-3, 6-0) with 23 points, six rebounds and three steals. Raylin Peterson struggled from the field but finished with eight points, 13 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Tatum Baumgartner added 10 points for Black Hawk.
Lexi Peterson led Pecatonica (6-8, 2-3) with 13 points. Anna Tisch chipped in 11, while Tessa Green tallied seven points.
Black Hawk was set to host top-ranked Mineral Point (15-0) in a nonconference game Jan. 17, then travel to Argyle (6-6, 3-1) Jan. 22, followed by a nonconference away game at Dodgeville (4-8) Jan. 22. Pecatonica is to travel to Monticello (6-6, 2-3) on Jan. 20.
Albany 88, Juda 10
ALBANY – The Comets had six players reach double digits in a thumping of the Panthers Jan. 14.
Kaiya Zurfluh led all scorers with 16 points for Albany (9-3, 4-1 Six Rivers East). Emileigh Dallman and Gracie Freitag each finished with 12 points, Brianna Dahl and Alana Durtschi added 11 each, and Payton Wachholz chipped in with 10. Abby Hollis finished with eight points. Up next for the Comets is a home nonconference game against Potosi-Cassville Jan. 22.
Juda (4-14, 0-6) was led in scoring by Anna Skoumal, who had four points. The Panthers will host Barneveld Jan. 20.
Brodhead 58, Turner 12
BRODHEAD – The Cardinals steamrolled the Spartans Jan. 14. Brodhead (13-2, 10-0 Rock Valley), ranked No. 8 in Division 4, dominated in the first half and went into the locker room possessing a 28-3 advantage.
Abbie Dix led Brodhead’s balanced offensive attack, scoring 13 points. Addie Yates scored 11, Onnikah Oliver 10, Sophia Leitzen eight and Joie Steinmann seven. Turner (3-9, 1-8) had five players score, none with more than one basket.
On Jan. 17, Brodhead traveled to New Glarus (11-3, 3-1 Capitol South) for a nonconference game, but results were unavailable by press time. The Cardinals travel to Evansville (5-10, 4-6) Jan. 20, then host Clinton (9-6, 6-4) Jan. 25.
New Glarus 60, Marshall 36
NEW GLARUS – The Glarner Knights picked up a major victory, knocking off Marshall Jan. 14. It was the first time since 2012 that New Glarus had beaten the Cardinals.
“It would have been 10 years next month since New Glarus had beaten Marshall. Tonight we were able to get that monkey off our backs,” said Kevin Parman, Knights head coach.
New Glarus led 30-26 at halftime, but blew the game open in the second half, outscoring Marshall 30-10. Marshall made just one field goal in the entire second half,
Lindsey Schadewalt led the Knights with 17 points, while Elle Lancaster had 11. Alex Atwell and Grace Nommensen each added eight points. New Glarus was 20-for-29 from the free throw line.
New Glarus was set to host Brodhead Jan. 17, then travel to Cambridge (9-4, 2-1) Jan. 20 before hosting Lodi (3-11) Jan. 25.
Monticello 63, Barneveld 44
MONTICELLO – The Ponies used a burst of energy in the second half to pull away from the Eagles in a Six Rivers East game Jan. 14.
Monticello went into halftime nursing a 7-point advantage, but Barneveld made it a 1-possession game early in the second half.
“We were able to handle their press and I had girls step up to make some big shots,” said Lori Brokopp, Monticello coach.
Seven Ponies scored in the game, led by junior Ellie Gustafson’s 23 and freshman Dalana Trumpy’s 20. Shelby Marx led Barneveld with 19.
Monticello was scheduled to play at Orangeville (Ill.) Jan. 17 in a nonconference game, then host Pecatonica Jan. 20.
