ARGYLE — The Orioles had a big start to their week, walking-off against ranked Black Hawk April 15 and then handily beating Monticello the next night.
In the 3-2 win over Black Hawk, honorable mention in the Week 2 WFSCA rankings, Argyle won on a pair of doubles in the bottom of the seventh. The Orioles had tied the game an inning earlier when Natalie Romdenne hit a 2-run inside-the-park home run, and Leah Flanagan smacked a leadoff pinch-hit double to right in the seventh to put the game-winning run in scoring position. Maggie Godfrey re-entered to run at second base, and two batters later Grace Ganshert won it with an RBI double to center.
“We had more errors (2) than I would have liked, but it was a good team win,” Argyle coach Heidi Ganshert said.
On the mound, Grace Ganshert pitched all seven innings, allowing six hits and a walk with eight strikeouts. A freshman, Grace was 3 for 4 at the dish with two doubles. Romdenne was 2 for 2 and Kirsten Ostby had a double.
Bailey Butler was 2 for 4 with a double for the Warriors. Both Black Hawk runs came in the top of the fifth inning off starter Hannah Butler, who allowed 10 hits and struck out six in 6.1 innings on the hill.
“We are having trouble with our identity in the field,” Warriors coach Curt Leuzinger said. “We are struggling with making plays in certain spots. We have to get sound in the field and help our pitchers out.”
The next night, April 16, Argyle dominated Monticello 9-1. The Ponies scored their only run in the top of the first, while the Orioles tied it in the bottom half of the frame and took the lead for good in the second.
Grace Ganshert pitched five innings to get the win, allowing three hits and striking out 10 with no walks. Romdenne threw a perfect sixth inning, and Kyah Hendrickson stranded a runner in the seventh.
Monticello’s Harley Disch took the loss on the hill, allowing 10 hits and 10 walks in six innings of work. Disch struck out two batters. Sara Blumer was 2 for 3 with a double for Monticello.
For Argyle, Lexi Leigh was 2 for 4 with three RBIs, Alysabeth Lantz was 2 for 2 with two walks, Tori Lantz was 2 for 3 and Ostby hit a triple.
“We didn’t hit that well and made some stupid errors in the field,” coach Ganshert said.
Black Hawk 10, Pecatonica 0
SOUTH WAYNE — The Warriors rebounded from the loss to Argyle with a mercy-rule win over the Vikings April 16.
Bailey Butler got the win on the mound, striking out 10 with two hits and no walks in five innings. She also had four runs scored and four steals. Hannah Butler was 2 for 2 with a triple and three RBIs, and Mia Jackson was 2 for 2 with a double.
Lexi McSherry took the loss on the mound for Pecatonica, allowing 10 hits and three walks while striking out two. Six of the 10 runs against her were earned. Alexia Knutson doubled for Pecatonica, and Joselyn White had the only other base hit.
Black Hawk took a 1-0 lead after the first inning, and held a 4-0 advantage after the third. The big inning for the Warriors was a five-run fourth, which made it 9-0.
Juda-Albany 10, Pecatonica 0
BLANCHARDVILLE — The Panthers pounded out 13 hits in a dominating win April 15.
Emileigh Dallman was 2 for 4 with a double in the leadoff spot, while Briana Crull finished 3 for 4 with a double. Triniti Elmer also doubled and had two hits, while Lydia Bouc was 2 for 3 with a walk.
Dallman got the win on the mound, throwing three hitless innings with two strikeouts and two walks. Emily Makos entered in relief in the fourth inning and strikeout out seven with three hits in three innings of work.
McSherry took the loss for Pecatonica, allowing 13 hits and two walks to go with six strikeouts and just five earned runs in six innings.
Barneveld 3, Juda-Albany 1
BARNEVELD — Makos was charged for the loss on the mound, throwing six innings and allowing just five hits and a walk against the Eagles April 16. She struck out four.
The Panthers scored their only run in the top of the first, but Barneveld tied it up in the bottom half of the inning. The Eagles scored their final two runs in the third.
Crull was 2 for 3 with a double, while Dallman had a double.
Mineral Point 2, Darlington 1
MINERAL POINT — The Redbirds played one of its best games of the season April 15.
Lucy Heinberg hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning to give Darlington a brief 1-0 advantage. Teammate Holly Ray had the only hit of the day for the Redbirds.
Mineral Point would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth and score the go-ahead run in the fifth.
Darlington put one last bit of pressure on the Pointers in the sixth. Kennedy Wagner led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs and the runner at second, Heinberg was intentionally walked, but Ray singled to load the bases. Chloe Muhlstein then struck out swinging to end the threat.
Alyssa Tuescher and Kaylyn McGuire together scattered six hits from the eighth-ranked Pointers. Tuescher pitched the first four innings, getting tagged for both runs on five hits and four walks. She struck out two. McGuire allowed a hit and a walk with a strikeout in two innings of work.
Jefferson 12, Brodhead 0
Jefferson 18, Brodhead 5
JEFFERSON — The Cardinals were swept by the 10th-ranked team in Division 2 on April 16.
Hannah Myhre had Brodhead’s only hit in the opening 12-0 loss. Madisyn Kail was pegged for 10 hits, three walks and just seven earned runs in four innings on the hill for Brodhead. She allowed a two-run home run to Kylee Lukes in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In Game 2, Brodhead led 3-2 after the first inning, but Jefferson scored seven runs in the second and six in the third to put the game away.
Cora Hafen was 2 for 3 with a three-run home run for Brodhead in the first inning, and then added an RBI single in the fifth. Morgan Heinle added an RBI single in the fifth.
Nataley Bump took the loss on the mound, giving up 15 runs (7 earned) in just three innings of work. Jefferson tagged Bump for 13 hits and two walks, while striking out four. Kail pitched the final two frames for Brodhead, allowing three earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
Jefferson had six extra base hits in the game, with Eden Dempsey, Claire Peachey and Lukes each going deep.
Big Foot 19, Brodhead 2
BRODHEAD — After allowing a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first, the Cardinals imploded in the second. Brodhead allowed 10 unearned runs to score in the frame and were unable to recover the rest of the game.
The Cardinals finished with six errors. Just five of Big Foot’s 19 runs were earned off Bump, who was charged with the loss on the mound. Bump allowed 12 hits, five walks and hit three batters. She also threw a pair of wild pitches and struck out three.
Big Foot’s Riley Summers was 3 for 3 with two walks in the leadoff spot, scoring four runs and hitting a grand slam in a five-run fifth inning.
Bump, Myhre and Hafen each had hits for Brodhead, with Haden driving in both runs on an RBI single in the fourth.
Evansville 11, New Glarus 0
NEW GLARUS — The Blue Devils found their stroke, smacking 16 hits against the Glarner Knights in a six-inning game.
Evansville’s Audrey Ischi and Emily Pfeil each homered in the contest. Laura Bettenhausen and Hailey Elwood each doubled and tripled in the contest for the Devils as well.
New Glarus pitcher Maci Carney gave up two runs in the first inning, and a run in both the third and fourth. Evansville then ran off five runs to put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth.
Carney was charged with 10 earned runs on 16 hits and three walks. She struck out three. Faith Bump doubled from the leadoff spot for the Knights, while Riley Keehn added the only other hit for New Glarus at the plate.
