Argyle splits, NG tops Waterloo in playoff preview

ARGYLE — The Orioles defeated Monticello-Albany by mercy rule 14-4 June 7, then had their fortunes reversed the next night against Barneveld, 16-6.

Monticello-Albany briefly led Argyle 4-3 after the top of the third, but the host Orioles plated five runs in the bottom half of the inning, then added two runs in both the fifth and sixth, and walked off the field winners early in the bottom of the sixth when Buddy Gerber scored on a wild pitch.

Gerber tossed three innings and collected all outs via strikeouts. Jayden Johnson started the first here innings, allowing four runs (one earned) and struck out eight.

Clay Ritschard had two hits, a walk, five steals and three runs scored for Argyle. Brady Penniston doubled, walked twice, swiped a bag and scored twice. Johnson scored twice and had two steals. In all, Argyle batters walked nine times and collected eight hits. The Orioles also took advantage of 11 Monticello-Albany errors — though Argyle committed six as a team.

Andy Gertsch, Brayden Bakken and Rob Schroeder all pitched for Monticello-Albany. Carter Wirth, Evan Rufer and Nick Stokstad doubled for the Ponies. 

The next night, the Orioles walked 10 times but collected just four hits in the loss to Barneveld. Ritschard had two hits, two walks and stole two bases. Penniston walked three times.

Max Godfrey took the loss on the mound, allowing 12 runs in 2.1 innings of work. He walked seven and gave up five hits without striking out a batter. Penniston pitched to three batters, walking them all. Ritschard came on in relief, tossing 2.1 innings and allowing one run on a hit, a walk and a hit batter to go with five strikeouts. Will Helfvogt also relieved.

Argyle led Barneveld 6-5 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Eagles scratched across a run to tie it at 6-6. The Eagles plated 10 runners in the next inning, ending the game.


Boscobel 11, Darlington 2

DARLINGTON — The Redbirds committed eight errors in their June 7 loss to Boscobel. Darlington fell behind 5-0 before breaking the egg with a run in the third. Boscobel added two runs in the fourth and four in the seventh for insurance. Darlington’s other run came in the bottom of the seventh.

Braden Davis had a single, a double and two RBIs for Darlington. Raegan Jackson walked and singled, and Barrett Vieth and Rawson Meylor each scored for the Redbirds. 

Breylin Goebel allowed three runs in two innings of work. Jackson gave up three runs in 1.1 innings. Cayden Burbach pitched the final 3.2 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out five. 


New Glarus 9, Waterloo 7

WATERLOO — The Knights built a five-run lead entering the last inning, which was enough to escape the Pirates June 7.

Peyton Mendleski and Cooper Dreyfus each had three hits for New Glarus. Mendleski doubled, scored two runs and drove in a pair, while Dreyfus homered, had two doubles, two runs and three RBIs. Kylo Barker and Leyton Mihlbauer had two hits apiece, and Carter Siegenthaler added a double. 

Eli Zimmerman got the win on the mound, allowing three runs in four innings. Brett Warrell allowed one run in an inning of work, while Mihlbauer tossed 1.1 innings in relief. Barker got the save, striking out a batter and getting a flyout in five pitches.


Fennimore 8, Pecatonica 7

FENNIMORE — The Vikings dropped a nonconference game June 8 after committing five errors.

Coy Ruegsegger took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs in 2/3 innings in relief. Elijah Knutson opened the game allowing four runs (one earned) in three innings. Jameson Johnson allowed a run in 1.1 innings, and Dakota Doescher pitched a scoreless sixth inning.

At the plate, Doescher and Hunter Enloe each homered and drove in two runs. Bryce Johnsrud added three hits and a walk, and Knutson had a pair of hits. 

Pecatonica was slated to play Barneveld June 10 for the right to be the Six Rivers East conference champion. The Vikings led Barneveld by a game in the standings, but if the Eagles won, they would be shared champions.
