Argyle bounces back with win over Albany

ALBANY — After a 50-38 loss to Highland on Monday, Jan. 9, the Orioles rebounded with a 42-24 victory over the Comets on Tuesday, Jan. 10.

Argyle never trailed in the game, outscoring Albany 23-12 in the first half and 19-12 in the second. The closest the Comets got in the second half was seven points at 23-16.

Ike Waage and Max Godfrey led the Oriole offense, scoring 17 and 10 points, respectively. Godfrey was two rebounds shy of a double-double, with a team-best eight rebounds. Noah Moen and Waage trailed with six rebounds each.

For Albany, Kaden Zurfluh had a team-high eight points with one 3-pointer. Drew Sertle accounted for the second three in his six-point total. Ethan Koss and Nate Stokstad tallied four points each. On the boards, Gage Roth grabbed a team-leading seven rebounds.

Statistically, Argyle had the edge in points off turnovers (19-5) and points in the paint (36-12), while Albany drew more fouls (19-8). Both teams shot under 50% from the free-throw line, though. Albany shot 6-for-13 for 46%, while Argyle made three of seven shots for 42%.


HIGHLAND 50, ARGYLE 38

HIGHLAND — Despite outscoring the Cardinals 16-13 in the second half, the Orioles suffered a nonconference loss on Monday, Jan. 9. Argyle couldn’t overcome a 15-point first-half deficit.

The difference maker came in shots from beyond the arc, as Highland made eight 3-pointers compared to Argyle’s two.

Willie Helfvogt was responsible for both those threes in his team-leading 21 points. The next highest scorer was Waage and Godfrey with six points each. Mason McNett provided the remaining five points.
