BLANCHARDVILLE — William Helfvogt’s 26-point performance helped lift Argyle past Pecatonica 65-53 on Tuesday, Dec. 6.
Pecatonica had a 30-21 lead at halftime, as six different players were able to score. Jameson Johnson scored eight first-half points with three buckets and two free throws. Coy Ruegsegger and Evan Dochnal chipped in six each, while Tyler McKeon had five. Elijah Knutson drained a three, while Ethan Meyering knocked down a bucket.
On the other end, Helfvogt scored nine points with two 3-pointers. Ike Waage chipped in with six points, while Casper Moen had four. Max Godfrey was the fourth player to score in the half with two points.
Fouls hurt the Vikings in the second half, as the Orioles had 19 opportunities at the free-throw line. Combined, Argyle went 18-for-19. Helfvogt made eight of those free throws.
Conversely, the Orioles were able to shut down Dochnal and Ruegsegger. In the first half, the two had 12 combined points. In the second, they only put up two. McKeon and Johnson continued to lead the Vikings in the second half with nine and six points, respectively, but it wasn’t enough.
In addition to Helfvogt’s 26 points, Waage and Godfrey also scored in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
For Pecatonica, McKeon and Johnson each had 14 points.
BLACK HAWK 65, JUDA 21
JUDA — The Warrior defense limited Panthers’ scoring, as Black Hawk opened its conference season with a road win on Tuesday, Dec. 6.
Lucas Milz led Black Hawk with 13 points, making all three of the Warriors’ shots from beyond the arc. Andrew Figi chipped in 12 points, eight of which occurred in the second half. Jovanny Erickson and Carter Baumgartner each had 10 points.
On the other end, Jayden Brown was the leading scorer for Juda with seven points. Braydon Steinmann followed with six points, all of which were made from downtown.
BELLEVILLE 62, DARLINGTON 60
DARLINGTON — The Redbirds boys’ basketball team hasn’t caught a break all season, as they’ve been in three competitive games. Most recently, Darlington fell to Belleville on Tuesday, Dec. 6.
Will Murray continues to lead the Redbird offense, as he posted 28 points with five rebounds. Carver Fitzsimons, the other half to Darlington’s dynamic duo, recorded a double-double with 16 points and a team-leading 13 rebounds.
Darlington attempted 16 3-point shots and made just three of them. The makes came from Taggart Gille, Reagan Jackson and Broker Buschor.
BARNEVELD 57, MONTICELLO 53
MONTICELLO — The Ponies fell to the Eagles in overtime despite having a three-point lead with less than a second left in regulation. Barneveld’s Nick Poad got the inbound and made a buzzer-beater to send the game into overtime. Those were Poad’s only points of the game.
The game was competitive throughout, as the two teams were tied three times and exchanged the lead six times. Monticello had a 27-22 lead after the first half but were outscored 29-24 in the second. Barneveld had three free-throws and a 3-pointer in overtime while Monticello had just a basket.
Jackson Eyler was the leading scorer for Monticello with 14 points. Ryer Indergand and Peyton Smith also scored in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Smith recorded a double-double with his team-leading 10 rebounds.
Barneveld’s top three scorers also finished in double figures: Ryan Gust (15), Kasey Helgenson (14) and Tucker Shipman (13). Gust and Helgeson each grabbed five boards for the Eagles, while Brady Esch had a team-leading six rebounds.
