Argyle beats Juda, Monticello tops Pec
New Glarus falls in tough five-set match to Palmyra-Eagle

JUDA — The defending Six Rivers East champions continued their conference winning streak in the season-opener Aug. 28. Argyle defeated Juda in straight sets 25-12, 25-9, 25-22.

“Argyle served strong, pushing (us) to many serve receive errors in the first two sets,” Panthers head coach Scott Anderson said. “In Game 3 (we) found some rhythm, but Jena Saalsaa recorded a big kill at 22-22 to get he side out and Argyle served out.”

Saalsaa had 13 kills and eight aces to lead the Orioles (1-0 Six Rivers East) and Alysabeth Lantz had seven blocks. Kristen Ostby had seven digs for Argyle, while teammate Megan Johnson dished out a game-high 26 assists.

For Juda (0-1), Taylor Golackson and Montana Steinmann each had four kills, and Karlee Kesler had nine digs and two aces. Hannah Powers added a block and Steinmann had five assists.

Juda hosted Barneveld on Thursday and travels to Black Hawk (1-0) Tuesday. Argyle traveled to Pecatonica Thursday and hosts Monticello Tuesday.


Monticello 3, Pecatonica 1

MONTICELLO — Abby Wicker had 17 kills and teammate Maggie Bak had 15 as the Ponies needed four sets to defeat the Vikings Aug. 28, 25-14, 22-25, 25-13, 25-16.

Lindsey Pence led Monticello with 30 assists, Lexi Graber had six aces, Mackie Errthum blocked five kills and Hannah Zanow and Alyssen Noriega each recorded nine digs.

Sami Holmstrom led Pecatonica with four kills and teammate Lexi Peterson had five blocks. Val Carr had three aces for the Vikings, which received five digs from Lilly Busser and five assists from Sydney Eaton.

Pecatonica (0-1 Six Rivers East) played Argyle (1-0) Thursday and hosts Barneveld Sept. 6. Monticello (1-0) hosted Black Hawk Thursday and travels to Argyle Tuesday before hosting Albany (0-1) Sept. 6.


Palmyra-Eagle 3, New Glarus 2

NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights nearly pulled off a big comeback in the home opener Aug. 28, but instead lost in five sets to Palmyra-Eagle, 24-26, 16-25, 26-24, 25-19, 10-15.

“While it didn’t end in our favor, it’s great to have a close competitive battle under our belt headed into conference play,” New Glarus coach Jenna Piche said.

Lily Himmelmann had nine kills to lead New Glarus, with teammate Alexah Mellenberger spiking down eight kills. Lola Gillaspie had eight blocks and six digs. Zoe Moen had six aces, Jada Malaise dished out nine assists and Mellenberger added six assists. Himmelmann also chipped in with three blocks and four aces for the Glarner Knights.

New Glarus was scheduled to travel to Wisconsin Heights on Thursday to open up Capitol South play, with a match at Marshall slated for Tuesday.
