DELAVAN — Argyle-Pecatonica sophomore Avari Steiner has advanced to compete in the WIAA State Golf Tournament Monday, June 9 and Tuesday, June 10 at University Ridge Golf Course in Verona. Steiner survived a 3-hole sudden death playoff Wednesday, June 4 at Delbrook Golf Course in Delavan in the sectional to advance.

As a team, Argyle-Pec shot 349 to place seventh in the sectional. Only the top two teams advance to state. Steiner shot an 80 to lead Argyle-Pec. Senior Alex Ruetten shot an 82.

Argyle-Pec coach Chuck Chandler was hoping his team would play well enough to qualify for State.

“We just didn’t play well enough as a team to have hopes of advancing to state. We had some very disappointed kids,” Chandler said. “It was exciting to follow Avari in that 3-hole sudden death playoff. I thought she had it won on the first and also the second hole. It’ll be fun to watch her play at University Ridge. I expect her to do pretty well,” Chandler said.

Steiner is the sole representative from the SWAL competing in the state golf tournament.

Elsewhere, in the WIAA Division 2 sectional at Dodgepoint Country Club in Mineral Point, Monroe senior Aaron Benzschawel and New Glarus senior Lance Brecklin each shot an 82. The final individual spot at state from the sectional went to Prairie du Chien’s Owen Achenbach with a 77.

Monticello-Belleville senior Evan Thomas carded an 86 and Monroe junior Brody Koehn finished with a 94.
