ALBANY — The Albany Athletic Department announced its 2023 Hall of Fame class recently. The four selected athletes are:
● Mike Morton
● Evan Blumer
● Marcie Brewer-Brugger
● Evan Blumer
Mike Morton was a graduate of Albany High School in 2007, where he earned 10 varsity athletic letters in cross country, basketball, and track and field throughout his high school career of 2003-2007.
Mike’s program awards in cross country included most improved, coaches award, and most valuable runner. Mike earned first team and second team all-conference accolades.
In basketball, Mike was a true floor leader, as he ran the point guard position. Mike earned first-team all-conference as a senior and was also named second-team Wisconsin State Journal All-Area as a senior.
In track and field, Mike helped the 2007 Comets claim their first team conference championship since 1993. Mike’s 4x800 relay qualified for the WIAA state track and field championships.
Even after graduation, Mike continued to mentor and lead Albany youth as the JV boys basketball coach.
Evan Blumer was a graduate of Albany High School in 2019 where he earned eight varsity athletic letters in football and track and field throughout his high school career of 2015-2019.
The Evansville-Albany football team won the Rock Valley Conference Championship during Evan’s freshman, sophomore, and junior seasons. Evan was named first team all-conference as a junior and senior. He was the Defensive Lineman of the Year in the conference during both his junior and senior years and Defensive Player of the Year as a senior. Evan earned MVP during his senior year, when he was also named team captain.
In the spring, Evan specialized in the shot put and discus. To this day, Evan still holds the AHS record in the discus and is tied for the AHS shot put record. Evan was the conference champion as a senior. He was also the regional champion all four years of his high school career. He was the WIAA sectional champion as a sophomore, junior, and senior. His junior year, Evan placed third at the WIAA state championships in discuss. As a senior, Evan placed fourth at the WIAA state championships in discuss.
Marcie Brewer-Brugger was a graduate of Albany High School in 1998, where she earned 12 varsity athletic letters volleyball, basketball, and softball from 1994-1998.
Marcie was a four-year starter and letter winner on the volleyball team. She was named the most improved player on Albany’s team as a sophomore and most valuable player as a junior and senior. Marcie was named second team all-conference as an outside hitter as a junior and senior.
Marcie was also a four-year starter and letter winner for basketball. She helped her team win regional championships during her freshman, junior, and senior seasons. Marcie was Co-MVP as a junior while garnering honorable mention all-conference honors during her junior and senior seasons.
Again, Marcie was a four-year starter and letter winner for softball. She was named MVP or Co-MVP of the Albany softball team all four years of her career. As a freshman, she was named first team all-conference as a utility player. During Marcie’s sophomore, junior, and senior she was a first team all-conference pitcher.
Jessi Briggs-Thompson was a graduate of Albany High School in 2002, where she earned nine varsity athletic letters in volleyball, basketball, and track and field from 1998-2002.
Jessi was a valuable middle hitter and blocker for the Comets volleyball program. She was named second team all-conference as a senior and the led the team in kills and blocks. Jessi was MVP of the volleyball team her senior season.
In basketball, Jessi helped her team win the regional championship in 2001. The next year, she and her team were crowned conference champions for the first time in 30 years. Jessi was named honorable mention all-conference as a sophomore and first team all-conference as a junior and senior. Jessi was also named to the Wisconsin State Journal All-Area team as a senior. Following her high school career, Jessi proceeded to play four seasons at Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa while earning a degree in the medical field.
During the spring, Jesse was a sprinter and jumper on the track and field team. She was the recipient of a variety of program awards during her four years and was an alternate on the girls 4x400 meter relay team that reached the WIAA state championships her senior year.
These individuals will be recognized between the girls varsity and boys varsity basketball games at Albany High School on Thursday, Dec. 28 against. Parkview. The varsity girls game will start at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity boys game. The induction ceremony of this Hall of Fame class will take place between the two games at approximately 6:30 p.m.
