MONTICELLO - Freshman Courtney Leuzinger delivered some late-game heroics on Tuesday.

Leuzinger laced a game-winning RBI single to right center field to score Marissa Berg and give the Monticello softball team a thrilling 2-1 nine-inning win over Williams Bay in a WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal.

Berg led off the ninth with a single. She moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Karlie Klossner.

"She clutched up finally," Monticello coach Duane Garrison said of Leuzinger. "I know what she is capable of doing. I hope this one gives her a little confidence."

Monticello (17-4) advances to play Juda-Albany in a regional final at 5 p.m. Thursday in Juda.

Klossner pitched nine innings and gave up just one run on four hits. The senior struck out seven and walked one. Williams Bay only had two runners reach second base or beyond.

Klossner pitched out of a one-out, bases loaded jam in the third. She struck out two straight batters to end the threat. Klossner retired 17 straight batters after hitting the lead off hitter in the fourth.

"I thought that third inning might get to her, but she bared down and get out of it," Garrison said of Klossner. "She was just on. I don't think she wanted her career to end."

Sophomore Claire Geitzel went 2-for-3 to lead the Ponies. Leuzinger went 1-for-3 with one RBI and Berg was 1-for-4 with one RBI.

Brodhead 7, Darlington 1

BRODHEAD - Junior Amanda Pickel held Darlington hitless for five innngs and finished with 17 strikeouts to lead the Cardinals in a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal.

Pickel, junior Tabby Harnack, and sophomore Karina Roshiesen each went 2-for-4 as Brodhead got six runs on three hits and three errors in the first inning off Darlington starter Laura Steiner.

Pickel did the rest by allowing just two baserunners on back-to-back walks to Darlington's Caitie Chiaverotti and Catie Fleming in the third inning.

The Redbirds (2-19) got their first hit off Pickel on a two-out single by freshman Taylor Cox in the sixth inning. Junior Jacke Johnson singled and scored in the seventh inning for Darlington's lone run.

Brodhead (18-5) will host Parkview in the Division 3 regional championship Thursday.
