MONTICELLO - Monticello sophomore Courtney Leuzinger delivered the knockout shot to Williams Bay in the bottom of the seventh inning, hitting a walkoff two-run home run to send the Ponies to the regional final with a 2-0 win.
"She tomahawked it," Monticello coach Duane Garrison said. "I didn't know if she'd have enough. I thought (Sam) Devoe would score, because I knew they wouldn't catch it. It was pretty exciting."
Clare Bruns started for Monticello and threw a complete game two-hit shutout.
"Her first three innings were one-two-three. She only faced 22 batters," Garrison said. "Our gameplan was first pitch right over the plate. The defense behind her tonight, I would honestly say, was flawless. It was our most complete game of the year. We've had some good games, but tonight we had girls diving for balls in the outfield, which we haven't had all year."
In other action, No. 1 seed Barneveld defeated fourth-seeded Argyle 6-2. With the win, Barneveld will host Monticello on Thursday. The Six River East rivals split the regular season series.
Brodhead 11, Belleville 1
BRODHEAD - The top-seeded Brodhead softball team kicked off their postseason run with a solid 11-1 win over Belleville.
The Cardinals pounded out 14 hits. Erin Kloepping was the top Cardinal hitter, going 4-for-4.
Brodhead's Brooke Boegli went all six innings. She gave up six hits, one unearned run, while striking out five. The Cards play No. 2 seed Parkview Thursday.
