MONROE - It was a Senior Night to remember for the Monroe wrestling team.
The Cheesemakers escaped Madison Edgewood-Monona Grove 39-36 Tuesday night in a Southern Badger Conference dual.
Monroe senior Lucas Leu's pin at heavyweight over Edgewood-Monona Grove sophomore Riley Quaerna in 3 minutes, 14 seconds helped seal the victory for the Cheesemakers.
"It ended up being a lot closer than it needed to be," Monroe coach Jeriamy Jackson said. "We had two matches go the opposite way I thought they would and both were nine-point swings. Instead of getting three points for each match, they got six points for those matches. Things like that make or break your dual."
Monroe senior Gavin Wels moved up a weight class to 119 pounds and defeated Edgewood-Monona Grove sophomore Luke Neumann, 4-2. It marked Wels' 29th win of the season.
At 145 pounds, junior Jack Deem pinned his opponent in 3:08. Monroe sophomore Steven Steiner at 160 made quick work of freshman Nick Schwandt, pinning him in 1:16.
Monroe junior Dillon Weckerly (171) pinned freshman Eric Volkey in 1:49.
"We ended up needing every point," Jackson said of the pins.
Monroe sophomore Dylan Schwitz (135) and junior Cory Kundert (215) won by forfeit.
"The young guys stepped up and gave it their all in each of their matches," Jackson said. "They show a lot of heart going out there even when they know that they may be outmatched."
