While the recent spate of cold and snowy weather has made life difficult for most area residents, ice fishing enthusiasts are enjoying excellent ice conditions on area lakes.
Steve Hubner of Darlington reeled in several nice crappies on a recent afternoon at Yellowstone Lake. He visits the lake around 20 times each winter. "The fishing is great this time of year."
Hubner enjoys the feeling of solitude out on the lake and doesn't mind the cold weather. He plans to attend the upcoming Yellowstone Lake Fisharee on Sunday, Feb. 1. "I like to check out the fish board (where contest entries are on display) and wander around talking to friends," he said.
The event, now in its 52nd year, offers dozens of door prizes and cash prizes for the largest fish in each category. Youngsters can take advantage of a BB gun shoot (9 a.m.) and a youth ice fishing seminar (1 p.m.). A spudding contest (four types) starts at 1:30 p.m.
Raffle tickets are available from members of any of the Lafayette County sportsmen's clubs. All proceeds from the event go to conservation projects throughout Lafayette County.
For more information, contact Steve Staver at 965-3639 or Randy Steiner at 523-1543.
MONTESIAN FISHEREE IS JAN. 25 The Monticello Lions Club and Green County Conservation League will once again play host to the annual Lake Montesian Fisheree in Monticello, Sunday, Jan. 25. The event kicks off at 7 a.m. and concludes when the names of raffle winners are drawn at 3 p.m.
Lions Club member Maynard Hefty reports that Lake Montesian has recovered nicely after the lake was drained four years ago. An assortment of good-sized bluegills, crappies, northerns, catfish and bass are a result of the restocking effort, he claims. "The fishing is much better now."
Kim Christen, President of the Conservation League expects up to 200 people will attend the event, depending on the weather.
Prizes are awarded for the largest and smallest fish. "That's where we have the most fun - the kids trying to catch the smallest fish," Christen said.
The Lions Club hosts a food stand in the warming house throughout the day.
Raffle tickets are available from members of the Green County Conservation League and the Monticello Lions Club. For more information on the Lake Montesian Fisheree, contact Maynard Hefty at 938-4403 or Kim Christen at 543-3900.
FREE ICE FISHING WEEKEND PASSES
The Outdoor Heritage and Education Committee of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress recently approved a resolution to offer a free ice fishing weekend each year in February. The resolution surfaced at the 2008 Department of Natural Resources and Conservation Congress spring hearing held in Pierce County.
The originator of the measure, Dan White of Spring Valley, contends the free fishing weekend offered in June has been successful in bringing both youth and adults to the experience. He suggests that a similar event in the winter would encourage greater use our fishing resources and could be a great tool for visitors' associations to encourage winter vacations in Wisconsin.
The measure now goes before the Congress' Executive Council meeting in January. If approved, the resolution will appear as a question at the 2009 spring hearings statewide.
The Wisconsin Conservation Congress works with the Natural Resources Board and DNR to effectively manage the state's natural resources.
