Late runs not enough vs. Vikings

STOUGHTON - Monroe's slide continued Thursday, as conference leader Stoughton edged the Cheesemakers, 3-2.

"We played much better than Tuesday, but came up a run short," Monroe head coach Dale Buvid said, referring to the team's 14-1 loss to Oregon two days earlier.

Trailing 3-0 entering the seventh, Monroe made a bit of a run. An error and single with two outs put runners on for Brandi Trewartha, who smacked a two-run triple. Kristin McArdle popped up to end the game moments later.

McArdle, who doubled earlier in the game, also started on the hill for the Cheesemaker and allowed four runs and six hits, with all runs earned.

Kendell Niffenegger was 2-for-3 for Monroe.

"We had scoring opportunities in the fourth and the fifth, but we just didn't get that big hit," Buvid said.

Monroe hosts its annual invitational Saturday, pending weather. Appleton West, Freeport and Mount Horeb are among the teams scheduled to play.
