SPARTA - The Sparta High School girls soccer team scored the game-winning goal with 15 seconds to go to hand Monroe a 2-1 loss in its season opener on Tuesday.
Sparta scored the first goal in the 58th minute. It didn't take the Cheesemakers long to respond. Monroe junior Morgan Seffrood scored a tying goal on an assist by sophomore Emily Benzschawel in the 59th minute to tie the game at 1.
"I was very proud of the way the girls played," Monroe coach Kyle Kasten said. "They were obviously very upset. They will take it as a learning experience, and it will make them stronger the rest of the season."
Monroe sophomore goalie Anna Latimer had two saves.
The Cheesemakers will turn their attention in practice over the next two days to their home opener against Dodgeville at 6:45 p.m. Friday at T.R. Holyoke Field.
"The girls played with a lot of heart," Kasten said. "We just have to work on our touches, shots, passing and work on our conditioning so we can play a 90-minute game."
