MONROE - For the first time in the 58th annual Dr. Stiles Invitational, the swimming meet was divided into two days.

Two Monroe Area Swim Team members won individual championships Friday night. Skylar Lassen, 13, Monroe, won the girls 13-14 year-old 100-meter freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 28.15 seconds, which was just 0.22 seconds ahead of Milton's Aubrey Starr. Hannah Swenson, 10, won the girls 9-10 year-old 100 IM (1:56.9).

Sugar River's Willow Lee finished first in the girls 11-12 year-old 100 freestyle with a time of 1:38.56, which was about four seconds ahead of Monroe's Emily Meritt (1:42).

"I like it better because I don't lose my breath," Meritt said of the two-day format instead of swimming several races on the same day. "I wanted to try to win."

The one-day format had been the tradition in the past, but it was changed this season because the pool was reconfigured for meets and only has six lanes instead of eight.

After the first day of the two-day Dr. Stiles meet, Platteville leads Sugar River 122-119. Monroe is in third (57). The meet is named after Dr. Frank Stiles, a pediatrician in Monroe who started the swim team to give children an outlet in the summer.

In the girls 11-12-year-old division, Sugar River's Nina Schiro finished first in the 200 IM with a time of 3:43.63, which was about one second ahead of Monroe's Samantha Ellefson (3:44.67).

Amanda George, 8, of Sugar River, won the 8 and younger 100 IM with a time of 1:50.92, ahead of teammate Morgan Erstad (2:11.52).

George said her favorite part of the individual medley is the breaststroke.

"The breast is my favorite stroke," she said. "I have fun swimming with my friends."

Sugar River's Eli Zimmerman won the boys 8 and younger 200 IM (2:05.81) and Monroe's Zachary Meighan took second (2:38.72).

Jack Douma, 7, Sugar River, took first in the 8 and younger 50 freestyle (1:03.27) and Sugar River's Karley Michels won the girls 8 and younger freestyle (52.16). Douma's teammate Mason Yaun, 6, finished second (1:11.94). Sammie Schiro also helped Sugar River sweep the top two spots in the girls race as she finished second (53.11).

Sugar River's Brecklin Faber, 9, finished first in the boys 9-10 year-old 100 freestyle (1:54.67) and teammate Mason Thompson won the 100 IM (2:13.82). Sugar River's Zachery Frick, 12, took first in the boys 11-12-year-old 100 freestyle (2:03.14) and Christopher George was second in the 200 IM (3:23.73).

Belleville's Grace Przybyl won the girls 13-14-year-old 200 IM with a time of 3:33.95. Przybyl swims year-round with the Oregon Community Swim Club.

"I really love the IM's," Przybyl said. "I like the IM because you have a lot of variety. The 200 IM is like 75 percent of every stroke. The 200 IM is probably the hardest because you have to sprint the entire thing."
