MONROE - The Lady Cheesemakers volleyball team is still winless in conference after dropping a five game set to Stoughton on Parents Night Tuesday, 25-21, 30-28, 21-25, 18-25, 13-15.

"That was just brutal," Monroe head coach Dave Gersbach said of the collapse. "Stoughton is scrappy and had excellent ball control. We have just had some mental hang-ups in conference this year."

Monroe took a few hits to get going, trailing 6-3 in the first game before taking 9 of the next 12 points. Stoughton regained the lead midway through the game, 18-17, but Monroe's final 8-3 run, including a hard kill by Jamie Armstrong, closed the door.

In the second game, the Vikings jumped out to an 11-3 lead, forcing Gersbach to call a timeout. After the short rest, Armstrong smacked a hard kill, which gave the Cheesemakers momentum, going on a 12-3 run to take a 15-14 lead.

Stoughton came back to take control of the frame, holding a 24-23 lead. An out of bounds serve by Alex Thiermann tied the score, and the two teams went back and fourth until Chelsea Wyss smacked in a kill to end the game.

In the third game, Monroe held an 18-15 lead, but Stoughton came back. Thiermann collected two of her match-high eight aces as the Vikings went on a 7-0 run, taking a 22-18 lead and forcing a fourth game.

"We had a hard time passing," Gersbach said. "We gave a very hard effort, we just couldn't get much done."

Stoughton's Rachel Ott took over in the fourth game, scoring seven kills through the first 19 points, helping the Vikings get out to a 12-7 lead. In the frame alone, Ott, who had 25 kills on the night, had 11.

The Cheesemakers opened up the final game with an ace by Wyss, and led 10-6 after a hard spike by Jaclyn Ditter was tipped by a Stoughton player. From there, the Vikings took over, scoring three aces in its final nine points.

"We spend a lot of time in practice on serve receive. Stoughton served well, but we have to keep the ball in play off of the serve," Gersbach said.

Armstrong finished the game with 23 kills and three blocks. Jessica Wyssbrod had 30 assists, Abby Kennison had six digs and Wyss and Chrissy Marti each had three aces.

"We fell short. It's hard. It's tough to come off of the weekend we had, winning a big tournament, and then lose a tough game in conference," Gersbach said. "I'm just dumbfounded. (Our) girls played hard. They worked very hard. But it is tough to keep working hard when the results don't show up in the wins column."
