La Follette tips Cheese in OT

MADISON - The Monroe boys hockey co-op team jumped out to a two-goal lead against the Madison La Follette-East, but couldn't hang on and dropped a nonconference game to the Lakers 4-3 Saturday.

Freshman Cade Janecke of Orangeville scored a goal on assists from sophomore Payton Stauffacher and freshman Hayden Roth to give the Cheesemakers a 1-0 lead at the 8-minute-54-second mark in the first period. Sophomore Ryan Molitor of Warren scored a goal early in the second period to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead. About midway through the second period, sophomore Broc Kuberski of Argyle scored a goal on a pass by Janecke to give the Cheesemakers a 3-1 lead.

The Lakers scored two goals in the third period to tie the game at 3 to send it to overtime. Madison's Ben Blazel scored the game-winning goal on an assist by Camden Craighill at 6:15 in the extra session. With the loss, Monroe drops to 3-16-2 overall and 1-8-1 Badger South.

Monroe received a ninth seed in the WIAA boys tournament. The Cheesemakers will play at eighth-seeded Stoughton in a regional game Feb. 13.

Badger South Conference champion Madison Edgewood (16-4-2), a 2016 state quarterfinalist, earned the No. 2 seed and a semifinal bye. The Crusaders will play host to either 10th-seeded Madison La Follette-East (2-17-1) or seventh-seeded Waunakee (11-10-1) at a date, time and site to be announced.
