MONROE - Monroe senior Brooke McBain and sophomore Taylor Barrett came through with some late game dramatics, but the Monroe girls basketball team lost to Madison La Follette 62-54 in overtime Tuesday.

With the Cheesemakers (0-2) down 44-41 with about 1 minute to go, Barrett scored and was fouled. She made the free throw to convert the conventional three-point play to tie the game at 44. McBain scored the game-tying basket with about 45 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

The Lancers came up with a critical steal and basket in overtime to take a 56-50 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

"We were playing catch up the rest of the game and weren't able to close that gap," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "We found a way to claw back into it. I told the girls I was proud of how they battled back into it. Our non-conference games are preparing us for conference."

McBain scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Cheesemakers. Barrett scored 11 points and Vanessa Studer added 10.

Clare Goede scored 16 points to lead the Lancers.

Monroe will open up Badger South Conference play at Milton on Friday.

"We have to find a way to get that first win at Milton on Friday," Mathiason said.
