BARABOO - The Darlington boys basketball team had two chances in the final 20 seconds to beat La Crosse Aquinas in a WIAA Division 4 sectional championship game on Saturday, but came up just short and lost a thriller 50-49.
La Crosse Aquinas senior Alex Schulte converted a conventional three-point play with 22.5 seconds to go to give the Blugolds a one-point lead. The Redbirds were called for traveling on their first opportunity to win the game. With 5 seconds left, the Redbirds failed to get a shot off and lost the heartbreaker by one-point.
Schulte scored a game-high 20 points. With the win, La Crosse Aquinas earned a trip to state semifinals Thursday in Madison.
Darlington junior Trevor Johnson scored a team-high 15 points and junior Will Schwartz added 14 points. Both Josh Soper and Chad Golackson chipped in six points.
It was a see-saw game between the Redbirds and Blugolds. Darlington (20-6) led by as many as seven points. Golackson, a Darlington junior, drilled a 3-pointer to give the Redbirds a 47-45 lead with 3:15 left. Junior teammate Trevor Johnson had a steal and layup with 1:14 to go to give the Redbirds a 49-47 lead.
Darlington missed three free throws in the final 2 minutes.
