DARLINGTON - The New Glarus volleyball team finished second at the Darlington Invitational Saturday, Oct. 12.
New Glarus (7-17, 4-4 Capitol South) beat Benton 26-24, 25-23 in pool play. The Knights also split two matches in pool play with Pecatonica 17-25, 25-17 and with Argyle 25-18, 21-25.
The Knights defeated Monticello in bracket play 20-25, 25-11, 15-10. In the championship, Barneveld knocked off New Glarus 25-21, 25-18.
"The girls came out ready to play," New Glarus coach Megan Maas said. "There is always a little rivalry between New Glarus and Monticello. They were excited to get to play them. They learned a lot and improved a lot. We are ready for the end of our conference season and regionals."
New Glarus sophomore Maddie Macht had a team-high 37 kills, 38 digs and nine aces in the tournament. Senior teammate Sierra Watrud had a team-high 62 digs and senior Mandi Sargent added 29 digs and six blocks in the tournament. New Glarus junior Breanne Kreklow finished with 105 assists.
Monticello (13-3, 10-0 Six Rivers East), the conference champion, won three pool matches knocking off Darlington 25-10, 25-15, beating Barneveld 25-19, 25-23 and defeating Deerfield JV 25-21, 26-24. The Ponies lost their first match of bracket play.
"They (New Glarus) are a good team," Monticello coach Scott Smice said. "They have some very good athletes. It was just one of those days. You have to show up and play every set. Pecatonica beat New Glarus in one set and they haven't won many matches this year."
Monticello senior Marissa Berg had 25 kills and junior Alyssah Kubly added 19 kills in the tournament. Senior teammate Claire Bruns racked up 45 assists and senior Clare Gietzel had 35 digs.
