NEW GLARUS - A 2-point conversion clinched a 29-28 victory for New Glarus-Monticello over visiting Mauston Friday, evening out the Glarner Knights' record at 2-2.
The team's throwing game was the hero of the night with senior Jared Carney at the helm. A tied game at the end of the third quarter put the teams neck-and-neck at 14. New Glarus-Monticello responded with as senior Tanner Jelle carried the ball 45 yards to the end zone.
Visiting Mauston would not be counted out. The Golden Eagles tied the at 21 with just under two minutes remaining.
The home team kept fighting, pushing the ball yards-at-a-time down the field, eventually reaching the red zone. Carney threw a perfect 12-yard pass to Jelle for six points. Carney showed up once more, this time with quick toss to sophomore Lukas Judd for the two-point conversion with 21 seconds left in the game to win it for the Glarner Knights.
Starting off strong, the home team drove for a touchdown, leading the Golden Eagles by 7-0 at the end of the first half. Coach Jeff Eichelkraut said the team began the game promising, but found themselves falling behind before rallying to win the nail biter.
"We started strong, but we got a little lackluster," Eichelkraut said. "They responded amazingly. I'm really proud of our guys tonight."
Mineral Point 28, Darlington 21
MINERAL POINT - In what coach Scott Zywicki referred to as a "story of two halves," Darlington found itself beat against Mineral Point, 28-21, Friday.
The defense made the game, Zywicki said. It all fell apart for the Redbirds as Mineral Point knocked in 28 points and dominated the second quarter, only allowing seven to the visiting team.
Darlington took the initial lead with a touchdown by senior Grady Reilly, who crossed the goal line from 8 yards out with six minutes left in the first quarter. Reilly had the second-most rushing yards for Darlington, carrying the ball 10 times to cover 114 yards. Fellow senior Kameron Blosch led the team with 18 carries for 133 yards. In receiving, Blosch had one reception for 16 yards while Reilly snagged 2-for-16.
Reilly had an explosive 49-yard sprint into the end zone with a three minutes left in the first half to put Darlington within two touchdowns.
Following halftime, Darlington shut out the Pointers. Senior Tyler Mosley sprinted in a TD for the Redbirds, covering 29 yards at the start of the third quarter.
The final quarter was scoreless on both sides, leaving Darlington seven points down and 0-4 overall.
"We just have to play a whole 48 minutes," Zywicki said. "The 'D' started to play extremely well, but we made too many small mistakes. You can't just play half a game."
Redbird quarterback Blake Whalen, a junior, completed four passes of 13 attempts for 37 total yards while also tossing one interception against Mineral Point. Senior Bailey McGuire had a successful night with his foot, scoring all three extra points for the Redbirds.
Evansville-Albany 41, McFarland 16
MCFARLAND - Evansville-Albany put the Spartans in their place Friday as they knocked out the home team and dominated the first half.
Senior Zach Mielke was hot for the Blue Devils, tossing in four touchdowns. Mielke was 10-for-18 with 189 passing yards.
His longest was a 45-yard pass to teammate Sulley Geske for a touchdown in the second quarter. Geske had a fair night himself, leading the team in receptions with five catches for 131 yards.
Evansville-Albany had a heavy first half. Back-to-back touchdowns in the final three minutes of the first quarter put the Blue Devils in the lead 20-8 at halftime.
The second half was a defensive battle. While Mielke managed to connect with Geske once more for an 8-yard touchdown pass.
Senior Logan Katzenmeyer led the team in rushing, covering 151 yards on seven carries.
