Knights eek out W; Juda tops O's

NEW GLARUS - The Cambridge boys basketball team had No. 2-ranked New Glarus on the ropes in a Capitol South Conference showdown Thursday.

Trailing by 15 points with 3 minutes, 30 seconds to go in the second half, the Glarner Knights stormed back. New Glarus senior Dishawn Gale scored a game-tying basket with 34 seconds left. Moments later junior teammate Zach Feller had a steal and scored the game-winning layup with 11 seconds to go to give the Knights a thrilling 78-76 win. With the win, New Glarus improves to 15-0 overall and 5-0 in the Capitol South Conference.

"It was not looking good for a while there," New Glarus coach Travis Sysko said. "These guys don't flinch."

The Knights forced a jump ball in the waning seconds to dodge a scare from the Blue Jays. New Glarus senior Cullen Brooks and junior Jaden Kreklow each scored a team-high 21 points. Feller added 19. The Knights knocked down nine 3-pointers. Brooks drilled three 3s.

Cambridge's Jacob Horton scored a game-high 22 points. Teammates Ryan Janson and Jacob Hommen each added 21. Janson hit five 3s. One big difference in the game was free throw shooting. The Blue Jays made only 9 of 20 free throws and the Knights were 9 of 14 from the charity stripe. In the final 9 minutes, the Blue Jays were 4 of 14 shooting from the free throw line.

"Fortunately, for us Cambridge missed some free throws down the stretch," Sysko said.



Juda 53, Argyle 40

ARGYLE - Juda senior Cole Fortney drilled seven 3-pointers and scored a game-high 27 points to carry the Panthers to a win over Argyle Thursday.

Juda (4-9, 3-5 Six Rivers East) led by just five points at the break. The Panthers oustcored the Orioles 32-24 in the second half.

Juda senior Keagen Haffele added 15.

Sophomore Miken Godfrey scored a team-high 20 points and made five 3-pointers for Argyle (4-11, 0-7). Senior teammate Brent Ritschard added 13.



Monticello 53,

Albany 40

ALBANY - Monticello sophomore Reece Rufer and senior Jon Errthum combined to score 32 points to lead the Ponies over Albany Thursday.

Rufer scored a game-high 17 points and Errthum added 15. The Ponies (6-7, 3-3) jumped out to a seven-point lead at the half, 22-15. Monticello senior Braden Gafner chipped in 10 and hit two 3-pointers.

Albany junior Corbin Kelley scored a team-high 13 points. Albany seniors Logun Parker and Josh Shell each chipped in 7. The Comets (5-10, 2-5 Six Rivers East) knocked down seven 3-pointers. Albany junior Josh Dahl, Parker and Shell each hit two 3-pointers.



Marshall 73, Belleville 69

BELLEVILLE - Marshall's Gabe Stewart and Reece Leistikow propelled the Cardinals to an overtime win over Belleville (6-9, 1-3 Capitol South) Thursday.

Stewart scored a game-high 22 points and Leistikow added 21. The Cardinals buried eight 3-pointers. Marshall's Quinn Killerlain drilled three 3-pointers. It was the Cardinals' (1-12, 1-3) first win of the season.

Belleville senior Brock Kelly had a team-high 20 points. Belleville senior Dalton Fahey and junior Austin Fahey each pitched in 9.

In other action, Mineral Point routed Darlington 84-54. The Redbirds (9-5, 5-3 SWAL) are now two games behind the Pointers (11-4, 7-1).



Girls Basketball

Brodhead 57,

Beloit Turner 38

BRODHEAD - Junior Alexis Oliver scored a game-high 17 points to carry the Brodhead girls basketball team to a win over Beloit Turner Thursday.

Brodhead (8-8, 5-7 Rock Valley) raced out to a 12-point lead at the break, 26-12. Brodhead senior Brooke Bescup added 15 points.

The Cardinals shot 70 percent from the free-throw line (14 of 20) compared to the Trojans which shot 58 percent (14 of 24). Brodhead junior Jacklyn Kleeman chipped in 8.
