Knights double their pleasure

LODI - Both the New Glarus boys and girls cross country teams captured Capitol South Conference titles Saturday in dominating fashion.

It marked the third conference championship in the last four years for both the boys and girls after each finished second last year.

New Glarus-Monticello freshman Ryan McCoy was the Capitol South Conference champion, finishing the 5K race in 16 minutes, 48.1 seconds. The Glarner Knights had five runners place in the top 10 and rolled to a 26-53 win over runner-up Marshall. Seniors Carl Pratt (17:14.7) and Travis Beutler (17:16.2) finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Fellow senior Tyler Meier took seventh (18:15.5) and sophomore Wesley Morgan was ninth (18:25.1).

The Knights displayed their depth with two other runners in the top 12 in freshman Alexander Yieser (18:27.9), 11th and sophomore Riley Miller (18:52.1), 12th. Both Yieser and Miller finished ahead of Marshall's No. 3 runner.

The New Glarus-Monticello girls cross country team also out-distanced Marshall, 32-55 for the title.

The Knights placed four runners in the top 10, and were led by senior Kelsey Bernet, who finished as the conference champion with a time of 16:47.6.

Freshman Madeline Brunner took third (17:19) and sophomore LouAnn Judd was fifth (17:54.2).

New Glarus-Monticello senior Haylee Thoman finished 10th (18:58) and sophomore Jessie Pratt was 13th (19:10).

New Glarus-Monticello will run in the WIAA Division 2 Platteville sectional on Saturday. The top two teams will advance to state.
