BLANCHARDVILLE - New Glarus junior Anya Schween doesn't mind playing an uptempo style of basketball.
So it goes without saying she was comfortable when New Glarus went to a 1-3-1 press in the second half and rallied from an earlier 10-point deficit to beat Pecatonica 51-44 Monday night.
"We were really working together as a team during the press," Schween said. "We just wanted to pressure the ball. I feel like the press really flustered them."
New Glarus senior Alycia Atwell scored a game-high 16 points and Schween had 12 to lead the Glarner Knights. Schween knocked down a critical baseline jumper with 1 minute, 10 seconds to go to give the Knights a 46-44 lead.
The Vikings committed eight of their 21 turnovers in the third quarter and shot just 3 of 9 in the period. With the win, New Glarus improves to 2-1.
"If we get down, our motto is that we will fight and battle back," New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said. "That (1-3-1 press) transferred over to the offensive end."
Scheele said Schween's baseline jumper late in the fourth quarter was a big shot.
"It gave our girls the confidence they needed to keep going," she said.
Pecatonica coach Matt Bakkum said he expected a press and halfcourt trap.
"They surprised us a little bit and we couldn't maintain our energy level," Bakkum said. "We started to throw the ball to a spot instead of a person. That was the difference in the game. Good teams win and finish close games. We are not there yet."
The Vikings (0-3) took advantage of 13 Knights' turnovers in the first half, and the Vikings went on a 13-4 second-quarter run fueled by some key baskets in transition.
Pecatonica junior Emma Marion scored on a layup and drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 3:19 left in the second quarter to give the Vikings a 21-15 lead. Pecatonica junior Michelle Francois hit a jumper late in the second quarter to give the Vikings a short-lived 25-15 lead. Atwell drove in for a layup and was fouled. She missed the free throw, but Lexi Hanson's offensive rebound led to Schween's jumper that cut the Vikings' lead to 25-19 at halftime.
"We played fantastic in the first half," Bakkum said. "I couldn't have been happier with the way we played. I don't know what happened between halftime, the locker room and the second half. Next time we face a 1-3-1 we will be ready and be able to adjust."
Pecatonica junior Lizzy Britt and Marion each scored 14 points. Francois added eight.
It started to unravel for the Vikings in the second half. Hanson grabbed an offensive rebound that led to sophomore Mandi Sargent scoring down low to cut the Vikings' lead to 31-30 about midway through the third quarter. New Glarus sophomore Courtney Feller hit a jumper to give the Knights a 32-21 lead. The Knights made 8 of 12 free throws in the final 2:27 to seal the game.
"The girls made free throws when they needed to," Scheele said. "It wasn't our best game, but I'm happy we were able to battle back and win."
