MONTICELLO - Pitching ace Karlie Klossner was solid in her return from injury and the top of the Monticello softball team's batting order had one of its biggest nights of the season Tuesday in a 5-0 victory against Pecatonica.
Klossner suffered a high ankle sprain covering the plate against Barneveld on May 3 and missed a handful of games. The senior was strong in her return allowing four hits and one walk while striking out three in a five-inning stint.
She retired 12 of the Vikings' first 14 batters in the Six Rivers East Conference game.
"That was a pretty good sign," Monticello coach Duane Garrison said. "We had her on a pitch count and once she reached that, I didn't want to push her."
Sophomore Claire Bruns finished, recording a strikeout and issuing a walk.
Sophomore Claire Gietzel and freshman Jordan Garrison, Monticello's Nos. 1 and 2 hitters, respectively, combined to go 5-for-5 and scored three of the Ponies' five runs.
"My one and two hitters caused a lot of damage," Duane Garrison said. "When they can do that, we can be a dangerous team."
Gietzel was 3-for-3, Garrison 2-for-2 and senior Tanya Smith 2-for-3 for Monticello (12-4, 6-2 Six Rivers East), which moved into sole possession of second place in the conference. Smith and sophomore Marissa Berg had RBIs.
Sophomore Julia Meyer went the distance for Pecatonica (7-11, 2-7). She allowed three earned runs on 10 hits, walked one and struck out two.
Barneveld 6, Argyle 5
BARNEVELD - Danielle Treuthardt clubbed two home runs and Argyle took a one-run lead into the bottom of the seventh before the Eagles rallied to win in Six Rivers East play.
Treuthardt's second home run, a two-run shot to right-center field, gave Argyle a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning. She also hit a solo blast to left in the third inning and both her round-trippers came with two outs.
"Her slugging percentage is like .900 and she's batting .540," Argyle coach Dan Treuthardt said. "She's just pounded the ball all year."
The Orioles' lead was short-lived as Barneveld's McKenzie Sporle hit a solo homer to tie the game and Hailey Kleppe scored the winning run on a past ball. Kristen Udelhofen pitched a complete-game seven-hitter for Barneveld.
Danielle Treuthardt finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and junior Kayla Ostby went 2-for-4 for the Orioles (9-8, 5-4 Six Rivers East).
Sophomore Jessica Treuthardt went 6 1/3 innings. She allowed eight hits and only three earned runs while walking one.
"It was a fun softball game. We were just one run short," Dan Treuthardt said.
Marshall 14, New Glarus 0
MARSHALL - The Cardinals scored 12 runs in the first inning and took advantage of five New Glarus errors in a Captiol South Conference game. Marshall's Morgan Hendricks held the Glarner Knights (1-15, 0-8 Capitol South) to just one hit while posting seven strikeouts.
