VERONA - Kevin Klopfenstein didn't waste any time reaching a major milestone Saturday.

The junior was one of three Monroe wrestlers to go 5-0 at the Verona Duals, giving him his 100th varsity victory.

Junior Trevor Gorr (220 pounds) and sophomore Brent Zimmerman (285) also went 5-0 for the Cheesemakers, who went 4-1 to even their record at 7-7.

Junior Jesse Keizer (120), junior Aaron Hesgard (126), sophomore Ryan Hughes (160) and sophomore Dusty Burkhalter (182) each went

4-1 for Monroe, which posted victories against Portage (39-31), Greendale (54-30), Verona (54-16) and Mequon Homestead (43-27). Slinger handed the Cheesemakers their loss, 36-20.

"It was a good tournament for us," Monroe coach Jeriamy Jackson said. "We've been wrestling teams all year that are pretty highly ranked - four of our losses were to teams ranked either in Wisconsin or Illinois. It was nice to wrestle against teams not so highly ranked and get good matches in for all of our wrestlers."

The highlight of the day was Klopfenstein's first-period pin against Verona's Eric Schmid - the 138-pound runner-up at the Bi-State Classic last month.

"We weren't really expecting to come out with a win in that match, but Kevin got an opportunity and took advantage of it," Jackson said. "It was kind of a scramble. The guy shot (at) him and Kevin hit him with a head seal and was able to get it nice and tight.

"For him to get his 100th win in that fashion was pretty exciting for him and the team."

Klopfenstein recorded four pins on the day, as did Gorr.

"He didn't really get pushed," Jackson said of Gorr. "He took care of business and did what he was supposed to do."

Zimmerman had two pins.

The Cheesemakers are next in action Thursday at Fort Atkinson, which beat Badger Conference power Stoughton.
