Kleeman carries Cards

ALBANY - Brodhead junior Jacklyn Kleeman turned in a monster performance knocking down 10 three-pointers and scoring a game-high 32 points to lead the Cardinals to a 68-54 nonconference win over Albany Saturday.

"With our Hall of Fame inductions and the Hoops for Harlow, I thought that would fire the girls up and they would come out with a lot of energy," Albany coach Derik Doescher said. "Brodhead came out with a lot of energy and we didn't match that."

Brodhead senior Erin Nyhus added 23 points.

"Erin Nyhus is one of the top guards in the Rock Valley and in southern Wisconsin," Doescher said. "We tried to slow her down, but she can really handle the ball, and it led to open shots for Kleeman."

Doescher gave kudos to Kleeman for her hot shooting.

"It's a credit to her," he said. "You don't see that often at high school or any level. We tried to get out quicker on her. Some of the 3s she hit were from the corner, and they were tough shots. Hats off to her on a career night."

Brodhead (2-2) played without two starters due to illness and injury. The Cardinals jumped out to a 34-26 lead over the Comets in the first half. Kleeman hit five 3-pointers in the first half and five in the second half.

Albany (1-3) was led by junior Libby Beck who scored a team-high 21 points. Senior Brook Kahler added 9 points, and sophomore Kristin O'Bel chipped in 8 points.

Doescher said he's not sure how much money was raised for Albany assistant boys basketball coach Andy Phillips' family. Phillips' 4-year-old daughter, Harlow, was recently diagnosed with cancer. The funds raised from the silent auction and 50-50 raffle went to the Phillips family.

"We had a full house," Doescher said. "We were raising money for a great family and a great cause."

New Glarus 65, Monticello 20

MONTICELLO - New Glarus senior Willow Lee scored a game-high 15 points to power the Glarner Knights past Monticello.

New Glarus (2-1) outscored the Ponies 35-7 in the first half. Monticello was plagued by 30 turnovers.

"We are not making very good decisions in the half court right now," Monticello coach Mark Gustafson said.

New Glarus senior Julia Barnaby and junior Lexi Krause each added 10 points.

"Willow Lee and Julia Barnaby are really good players for New Glarus we couldn't match up with," Gustafson said. "We are lacking experience and a post presence."

Monticello (0-2) was led by junior Alyssen Noriega who scored a team-high 8 points.
