BROOKFIELD - The Monroe girls basketball team struggled to score and lost the season opener to Kettle Moraine 33-19 on Saturday at the Brookfield Classic.
Monroe junior Taylor Barrett scored a team-high nine points to lead the Cheesemakers. Senior Heather Barta and junior Kayla Updike each added five points.
The Lasers jumped out to a 9-2 lead and went on an 11-0 run that spanned the end of the first quarter and included the first five possessions of the second quarter.
"We just couldn't overcome that," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "Defensively, I thought we did very good holding them to 33 points. We were never able to get any of that offensive flow going where we have confidence. We have to continue to find ways to score."
The Cheesemakers shot 9 of 12 from the free-throw line.
"That's very good," Mathiason said. "We will take that. We need to make more field goals."
Monroe (0-1) will have a week of practice before playing at Oregon (1-1) on Saturday, Dec. 1.
"They have a lot of experience and size back," Mathiason said of the Panthers. "I think a week of practice will be good for the team before our next game. We will be able to work on our offense and defense. We can build off what we did."
