JUDA - Juniors Matt Schmitt and Skyler Stuckey combined to score 39 points to lead the Juda High School boys basketball team to a 68-35 win over Johnson Creek in a nonconference game Monday.
Schmitt scored a game-high 21 points, and Stuckey had 18 points.
"I think it was a whole team effort that led to Matt and Skyler's success," Juda coach James Pickett said. "Our other players put them in position to score, and they were able to capitalize. Matt and Skyler have started on varsity since freshman year. They are used to the speed. They can control the tempo of the game."
Juda sophomore Keagen Haffele added 16 points and drilled three 3-pointers.
"I think he was the player of the game tonight," Pickett said of Haffele. "He probably had about 10 steals and threw Johnson Creek's offense off of what they wanted to do. He looked to score off of it in transition."
Juda improves to 2-0 even after making just 8 of 22 free throws.
"I'm not too concerned about it," Pickett said of the free-throw shooting. "Coming off of the long Thanksgiving break, I think we were just a little sluggish. It's something we will work on."
Juda hosts Belmont on Thursday.
"That will be a test," Pickett said. "We look to keep the momentum going."
Belmont 66, Monticello 25
BELMONT - Belmont hit seven 3-pointers en route to an easy win over the Ponies (0-3).
Belmont's Quinn Cushman scored a game-high 15 points and knocked down two 3-pointers. The Braves (1-1) jumped out to a 37-11 lead at the half. Belmont's Cole Johnson and Rain Voigts each added 10 points.
Monticello senior Logan Marty scored a team-high 14 points and made two 3-pointers. He was the only player in double figures for the Ponies.
