SOUTH WAYNE - Slow starts and service errors haunted Black Hawk as Juda battled its way to a four-set win over the Warriors Thursday.

Juda (4-3, 1-3 Six Rivers East) won the first two sets 25-20, 25-21 and then dug a big hole they couldn't overcome in the third set before pulling out a thrilling fourth set 26-24. The Warriors had nine service errors in the match including four in the first set.

"If we could have had our serves in it could have been a different set," Black Hawk coach Rachel Wolf said. "We can't have the slow starts against a team like Juda. They are scrappy. They won't let you have anything. You have to earn everything. If you can come in on the road and steal the first one like Juda, that is great. I'm proud of the girls. They showed some heart."

Black Hawk (2-4, 2-2) jumped out to an 18-13 lead in the first set after three straight aces from sophomore Sam Lovelace. The Panthers battled back to tie it at 18 and took the lead when a hit by Black Hawk junior Aleigha Sigafus went out of bounds.

Juda sophomore Alexis Goecks scored five straight points and had one ace and a tip from senior Cheyenne Ambler to give the Panthers a 24-20 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

The Panthers built a 10-5 lead in the second set only to see the Warriors rally. The Warriors were able to take advantage of some passing to set up Aleigha Sigafus and Kayla Sigafus. Black Hawk senior Nicole Diehl had an ace to give the Warriors a short-lived 15-14 lead. The Panthers pulled away to win the second set after the Warriors were called for a net violation and illegal hit.

Ambler had four kills to lead the Panthers. Juda sophomore Sara Jordan had four blocks and three aces. Goecks also added three aces.

The Warriors stormed out to a 12-5 lead in the third set after Black Hawk sophomore Jordyn Delzer's ace. The Panthers answered with two aces from senior Cheyenne Ambler to cut the Warriors' lead to 14-9.

Black Hawk sophomore Sam Lovelace responded with seven straight points including two aces late in the game that gave the Warriors a 22-15 lead they wouldn't squander. Black Hawk junior Aleigha Sigafus had two kills during the spurt.

Lovelace finished with a match-high 11 kills and seven aces. Aleigha Sigafus had nine kills and Alexis Warrell had 17 assists for the Warriors.

"I think our passes were more to target," Wolf said. "We executed better instead of playing defense all the time. We found a little more drive. The one thing we have to work on is being more confident finishing the play, set and match."
