JUDA - The Lady Panthers opened up their season with a bang, knocking off East Dubuque 58-26 on the opening night of the Juda Invitational.
"It's great because we're only in our ninth day of the season. To get a game in this early and play against someone different (was good)," said Panthers head coach Curt Brown, whose team will host Beloit Turner in tomorrow at 6 p.m. "We've started other seasons at different schools and we thought we'd try to have one here. East Dubuque filled a spot of ours just a few months ago, Kewaskum traveled a ways and we play Beloit Turner every year. It's nice that we can be home, too, and the families can come out."
Juda took control early on Friday, pulling out to a 27-14 lead by halftime, thanks to a 19-9 second quarter run. Keying the run was senior Alycia Grenzow, who scored 10 of her 18 points in the frame.
"We're trying to pick up where Heather (Boeke) left off last year. Alycia's a different kind of post player. She hit a three and she'll do that in practice," Brown said. "She will change our dynamic with Ellen (Kiser)."
The Panthers dominated the Warriors in the paint all night, as Kiser, the team's junior center, finished with 25 points for Juda.
"Ellen was consistent as usual," Brown said. "She did a great job."
In the third quarter, the Panthers pulled away. Juda out-scored East Dubuque 17-5 in the period.
"They started pressing in the third quarter and we made some adjustments. As the game went, we were able to get different people in to different spots," said Brown, who thought his new varsity players did well their first night on the floor.
"I thought (our new players) did great. Katlyn DeVoe, Courtney Moisan and Jessica Rackow did a great job," Brown said. "I thought Katlyn really stepped in and proved a lot last year at the JV level. I knew we would be set when the season started. Even though we lost six seniors - we had people coming in. It was a good start to the season."
In other girls basketball action, Albany lost its season opener to Lake Mills, 49-28. The Comets play Destiny today.
