BLANCHARDVILLE - The Pecatonica girls basketball team had an upset of Juda on their mind Friday night.
Juda led by just two points with 10 seconds left and Pecatonica had the ball, but committed a costly turnover and the Panthers were able to hang on for a 36-35 win.
"You don't like talking about moral victories, but we played a fantastic game," Pecatonica coach Matt Bakkum said. "I was proud of how we played for four quarters. We could have easily come out flat after Tuesday and let them roll over us."
Pecatonica (0-6, 0-2 Six Rivers East) was coming into the game on the heels of a 44-31 loss to Monticello on Tuesday. The Vikings outscored the Panthers
12-9 in the second quarter and took a one point halftime lead. The Vikings were able to limit Juda senior Ellen Kiser to just seven points. Juda senior C.J. Dunwiddie scored a team-high 13 points to lead the Panthers. Juda senior Amber Ramos chipped in eight points.
Pecatonica junior Michelle Francois scored a game-high 16 points and hit three 3-pointers.
Juda (6-0, 2-0) shot just 11 of 23 at the free throw line.
DARLINGTON 63, RIVERDALE 26
DARLINGTON - Junior Cassidy Chambers scored 20 points, senior Amy Jorgenson had 17 and junior Claire Scott added 10 for Darlington, but coach Mike Chambers was most pleased with some solid efforts by his bench players in the Redbirds' SWAL rout.
Darlington (3-2, 2-2 SWAL) cruised to a 16-3 lead after one quarter and outscored Riverdale
36-15 in the second half, when the Redbirds' bench played major minutes.
"This was kind of an opportunity to get a lot of girls playing time," Mike Chambers said. "Even though our starters produced, they didn't get as much floor time as they normally would. We have to turn around and head to Lancaster (tonight), which will be a tough battle."
The coach lauded the play of several reserves.
"It was nice to see Cassidy Cox step up and give us some real nice minutes," Mike Chambers said of the junior, who scored all eight of her points in the fourth quarter.
Three other juniors had nice games as well, the coach said.
"Kaitlyn Wall did a nice job coming in the fourth quarter, as did Alexa Hardyman, and Abigail Merriam did a nice job running the show late in the game."
Jorgenson finished with six assists and three steals, while Cassidy Chambers and Scott each had five steals for the Redbirds.
BARNEVELD 68,
ALBANY 22
ALBANY - Albany coach Bryce Pickett knew the Comets wouldn't match up well physically with Barneveld, but he was hoping for a better defensive effort in the Six Rivers East contest.
Rachel Slaney scored 16 points and Hailey Connoy added 15 for the Eagles, who rolled to a 22-7 lead in the first quarter and outscored the Comets 35-5 in the second half.
"They did a great job with their press and they crashed the boards," Pickett said of Barneveld. "Cassidy (Bump) worked hard on offense and defense, but we just need to find better ways to work together and step it up on defense. We've got to start playing better defense."
Bump, a junior guard, scored 11 points to lead Albany (1-5, 0-2 Six Rivers East), which travels to Belmont on Tuesday.
LAKE MILLS 62,
NEW GLARUS 39
LAKE MILLS - New Glarus played host Lake Mills even in the second half of a Capitol Conference crossover. Unfortunately for the Glarner Knights (2-3), the damage had already been done.
Senior forward Courtney Schmitt scored 16 points and the L-Cats bolted to leads of 20-6 after one quarter and 38-15 at halftime. Both teams scored 24 points in the second half.
"They pressed us and they're giants - they are really tall," New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said.
"Their press kind of flustered us and we got off to a bad start. They got inside baskets by executing off our turnovers."
Asked how many turnovers the Knights committed, Scheele said, "Too many. I don't want to know right now."
Anya Schween scored 10 points and Alycia Atwell added nine for New Glarus (2-3), which will host Lodi on Thursday night.
